I just couldn't get the episode out of my head, and this was the only way to get my brain to stop ranting about it for awhile. Enjoy!

Kate Beckett had lived through her share of unexpected events.
There was the obvious, her mother's death. It had taken her world, turned it up side down and shaken it until there was nothing left in it that wasn't torn apart. She, ever the calm and controlled one, had become obsessed with finding the murderer who took her mother away from her for no apparent reason at all. She had never thought that she could ever lose control like that before then.
Will. She never expected to fall in love with him. Though, who really expects to fall in love with someone? And fall she did. And proceeded to get knocked back on her ass when he left. But she got back up again. She always did.
As if that weren't enough, her job was practically the definition of unexpected. She put away crazy, sick, sociopathic killers. She wondered why she did it sometimes. Who in their right mind would want the job she had? To have to deal with those kinds of people on a daily basis… She had to admit, it took its toll on her. But she dealt with the craziness because she knew she was doing something good, making the city a safer place. At least she hoped so.
And finally, Richard Castle. The infamous writer using her as his inspiration for his new set of novels. On the weird-things-to-happen-to-Kate-Beckett list, this one was nearly at the top. She'd never daydreamed in a million years when she first joined the force that one day she'd have an immature novelist following her around.
But even more than unexpected than that, whether she liked it or not, was that she was actually getting used to him.
Getting used to their banter, the late-night hours pouring over cases, the eventual aha moment when they found the evidence they needed. His flippant comments to her suspicious glares. The ridiculously corny charm smiles and satisfied smirks.
Laughing on a regular basis. It was so good to laugh again.
Like that song in your head that you just can't get out, he had wormed his way into her life and wasn't budging. And so far, she hadn't gotten sick of that tune. In fact, she found herself whistling it quite often. The meaning behind the lyrics wasn't so clear yet, but still, it was catchy.
So, she picked up the phone, seeing Castle's name on the caller ID, and answered with a measured tone of annoyance, knowing it was probably some ridiculous question or worse, he was checking up on her, having for whatever reason decided that she needed protection. But instead she was met with frantic shouting into her ear, and shock waves of panic radiated through her mind at the news he told her.
The killer was still alive.
How could she not have figured it out. She should have figured it out!
Goodbye Nikki.
Nikki. Her fictional counterpart would have had this figured out long ago. But this wasn't a book where everything was planned out and printed in black and white. She couldn't go back. Life couldn't be rewritten, revisited, controlled. No, in the real world, the unexpected ruled over everything else; it could and would shock you at any given moment.
And unfortunately, she seemed to be a primary target.
