An old and frail gray tom cat limped into camp and collapsed in the cover of the bushes. A long furred ginger tom saw the blur of gray and dashed over.
"Fallenstar!" he gasped as he skidded to a halt next to the blue-eyed cat. The leader's breathing was weak and his heartbeat slow. "Skywhisper!" he called to a near-by warrior, "Get Leopardwish, quickly!" The warrior nodded and dashed off.
"No…" Fallenstar rasped and the ginger tom snapped his head back towards him. "Blazingclaw… it's too late…"
Blazingclaw stared in disbelief, "No! Fallenstar, you can't say that! You're the stron-"
"Blazingclaw listen to me…" Fallenstar snapped. "You will be a great leader… Unite RiverClan… it is your destiny…" the leader's voice trailed off and he laid his head down, closing his eyes for the last time.
"Fallenstar…" the new leader said staring at the leader's body. As if on cue Leopardwish padded over, knowing what had happened. After what had seemed like forever Blazingclaw stood up and padded to SprinkleStone. The rock was slightly slippery but his rough pads stood easily on it. He let out a yowl and cats turned to his attention.
"Cats of RiverClan!" he yowled. "A dreadful thing has happened." He paused; "Fallenstar has died…" he trailed off. Cats gasped in horror, some snickered; Blazingclaw didn't notice. "Since it is nearing Sunset, we shall sit vigil for him. After that I shall go with Leopardwish to Moonpool." Now was the time to choose a deputy… but whom? Troutcatcher was a good cat, but older than Blazingclaw by five moons. Seaswipe was too young and had not had an apprentice yet. Ah, Pantherspirit. She was a light ginger she-cat with white specks and blue eyes. She was younger-yes, but was brave and loyal and had already mentored Melodyclaw and was currently mentoring Moonpaw. She would perfect. "I say these words before Fallenstar and StarClan so they can hear and approve my choice-" he stole a glance at the soon-to-be deputy, "Pantherspirit shall be the new deputy of RiverClan!"
"Pantherspirit! Pantherspirit!" cats chanted. She looked surprised, but her brother, Lionclaw, nudged her and she bowed her head to Blazingclaw.
