Dean doesn't read books. Not works of fiction, anyway. He did try – when Sam left for college, he did his best to read the 'classics', so that if – when – Sam comes back, he'll find that he didn't have to go to freakin' Stanford to get education.

It's just that he doesn't get the books. Oh, he gets every word just fine, but the whole is beyond him. Take Dickens, for example. He wrote about a Miss Havisham, who was dumped at her wedding day. Dean thought that she, with all due respect, totally overreacted. He ended up throwing the book to the other end of the motel room and screaming 'get over it!'

Best-sellers aren't any better. The people there either worry about losing weight, or earning money, or both. Dean thinks they should get a life.

So he ends up reading the papers and Popular Mechanics, and when Sam doesn't notice, Scientific American. And he's not sure who's the freak, him or whoever wrote those stupid books. Probably him.
