The second batch of the day is nearly done, which means after this I can relax in my room. As I over to the ovens I smell burning. I open the oven and it's true, two of loaves are burnt. Oh no, why did this have to happen. I begin to take the bread out, when I hear her. My mother, she runs down the stairs and walks into the kitchen. "Peeta, what did you do?", she screams in the tone I know too well. I think she hates me because I'm the only one who she picks on. "I...I, I burnt two loaves", I say quietly so she might not hear, but I think she did. "The rest are alright". She comes over to me and slaps me across the face as I cover my face she hits me again at the back of my neck. Before she leaves she says "Give the burnt ones to the pigs or you eat eat them". I hear her laugh and then shes gone.

I get up and splash some water on my face to ease the pain. I get the bread and go outside. It's raining and I can bearly see anything. The only things I can make out are the pigs and the tree, which seems to have something underneath it. A girl, it's a girl. I see this starving girl, who looks like she hasn't eaten in weeks. She looks up and I see her eyes it's Katniss a girl from my class, I don't even think she knows who I am. Her father died a few months ago in a mining accident, so she has no food coming into her home. I throw one of the loaves to the pigs when I have an idea. I'll throw Katniss the other loaf to Katniss to feed her family, then she'll remember me. I throw the other loaf to her. She stares at the the bread then at me, she looks confused. I stare at her eyes until I'm called in for dinner. I walk in but before I go, I look out the window and find Katniss holding the slightly burnt bread in her weak, fragile hands.

The next day at school they let our class go outside for lunch. My friends and other people from my class are crowding around me because they think the bruise on my face was from a fight with another boy in my class. I don't tell them it was my mam but I just sit there agreeing with what they say, until I see Katniss on the other side of the yard. She's looking at the danelions which are over on the grass. She looks healthier and happy. She walks off, so I'm forced to listen to my friends talk. The only thing thats on my mind is yesterday will be the day that I will never forget and it's OK to burn bread.
