Rescue

His wounded shoulder grazed against the rough stucco wall, leaving behind a smear of crimson and forcing a harsh gasp from between clenched lips. Ignoring his acute discomfort and the black spots jitterbugging in front of his eyes, he edged toward the shadow-cloaked doorway, toward the room where he hoped to find his brother. The dusty boards beneath his feet creaked with each cautious step.
Reaching the doorjamb, he paused, raising the gun in his hand. With a final breath, he swung to the right and crossed the threshold. The human-shaped lump on the floor induced profound relief. "Thank God!"
