The Leather Jacket

As she was walking past the store window, something caught her eye. A male mannequin wearing a black leather jacket. She didn't know what quite compelled her to stop and stare at it. A minute later, she was inside the store, finding the jacket on a rack to her left.

She picked up a medium, his size and pulled it on. The sleeves were slightly too long and the jacket too baggy. But when she inhaled, she smelled the leather which reminded her of him when he would hug her or when she leaned into kiss him. She wrapped her arms around herself in the jacket and let the memories flood in, something she hadn't done for awhile.

How he would steal her books and write in the margins, one of her many pet peeves.

How he multitasked by pouring her coffee and leaning in to kiss her at the same time.

That smirk he would give her when he found something to be funny.

His vague, sarcastic banter with Luke at the diner.

How he fought with Dean numerous times.

How he left her on the bus and never called her back.

How he broke her heart into two pieces that never quite healed. How he came back for her.

How she let him down.

How she still thought of him in this very store pathetically holding a black leather jacket that somehow reminded her of him.

She slowly took the jacket off, feeling sad again. She hung the jacket up on the hanger and put it back on the rack. She ran her hand down the sleeve and took one last long look before walking out of the store and onto the street again. She breathed deeply and let herself stand in the front of the store for a second too long before walking down the street, trying to block out the memories that she had momentarily let it.

As she melt into the crowd of bustling people walking on the sidewalks, she felt an inexplicably sudden urge to find him and hug him and make him heal her broken heart. But then it went away, as quick as it had come and left her to always wonder what had become of Jess Mariano.
