A Practical Gift

Summary: Scotty's an engineer, so his gift to the Captain is bound to be practical in more ways than one.

Rating: K

Disclaimer: Don't own Star Trek, but I do have my own ST uniform shirt...

Jim ripped the wrapping from his gift and tore open the box. He looked up, puzzled. "A uniform shirt?"

"Not just a shirt, Cap'n," Scotty explained. "This one's woven o' micro-meta-aramid fiber."

"So it's bullet proof?" They had been sucked back to earth's 20th century twice in the last year and while he personally hadn't been shot, he had come pretty close both times.

"Better than that!" The Scotsman beamed.

"Yeah, I guess it would resist blades too," Kirk grinned, warming to the gift. That would definitely have come in handy on a few occasions.

"Aye, tha' too." The engineer continued to smile expectantly at him.

"Fire retardant and heat resistant, right?" All their clothing was, but this was probably even better (Jim was beginning to wonder if maybe the gift hadn't really been Bones' idea).

"Aye... " Scotty nodded slowly, raising his eyebrows.

Jim wracked his brains. What else was his engineer still waiting for him get about the gift?

"Dinnae ye see, Cap'n?" Scotty widened his eyes. "This sort o' fiber - it cannae be ripped or torn. Ye'll ne'er hae yer shirt shredded on a mission agin!"

AN: Actually I suspect Kirk likes having his shirt torn so he can show off his manly chest, but from an engineering perspective there are ways to prevent it.
