Jack's thoughts while driving with Tony and Jane Saunders to the exchange with Saunders. After the "didn't you learn anything from what happened to Terri?" scene. (I love that part so much!)
"I'll see you a the bridge." Jack told Chase and then closed his phone. He continued going over the exchange site and team's positions. Jane, who had until then been silent, spoke up. "I know my father released the virus in the hotel, that people died, but do you really think he'll do what he's saying;" Jack looked up at her. "release it all over the country?" Tony looked back at Jack through the mirror. Jack paused before answering. "If we don't stop him, yes."
"Why? There has to be a reason he's doing all this."
"When I worked with your father, he dedicated himself to saving the lives of innocent people. Something's happened to him. I don't know what, but now he believes our government's betrayed him."
"Is he right?"
"There's no easy answer to that. ... The work that your father did demanded that he make seemingly impossible sacrifices. Whatever happened to your father in Bosnia was obviously a sacrifice he wasn't willing to make. ...I'm sorry."
Jack looked back down at the screen in his hands and Jane turned back around. a sacrifice he wasn't willing to make. He glanced up at Tony in the rear view mirror. Tony's uneasy gaze was fixed on the road and his mind probably on Michelle. God knew what else he must have been thinking.
"Just because you sacrificed your wife for this job doesn't mean I'm gonna sacrifice mine!" Jack let those words spoken out of fear fill his mind for a second and it shook him. What sacrifice?...F**k you, Tony! What did that even mean? I don't give a damn if you're scared! It was a lie! I did not sacrifice my wife! She was taken from me and Kim. I'd so happily be rid of all this shit if I could just have her back! Dammit, you know that! I never gave her up for this job! Terri was murdered! Nina took her and I never saw it as a sacrifice! What was gained by her death? Nothing! Who was saved? Nina! Then she was Nina's sacrifice! And a sacrifice she made in for nothing because she never even got away. But I never sacrificed my wife! Never! I would gladly have given myself for her, but it's too late. Too f**kin' late.
Jack turned his attention out the window. I learned a lot more than I ever wanted to know from what happened to Terri.
He looked back up at Tony's eyes in the mirror. Regardless, he hoped Michelle would be ok. Tony didn't deserve what had happened to him. Jack could not even hope to wish that kind of pain on anyone.
Sacrifice meant one for another, good for better. I didn't sacrifice her. I lost her.
