The Missing Date
The phone was ringing on the other end. "Rodgers."
"It's me." Dan Ross said with a sigh.
"You got to Goren? How is he?"
"The doctors say he's going to be okay. They're keeping him overnight for observation, but other than some bruises and dehydration, he should make a full physical recovery."
"Good. You sound aggravated."
"Wouldn't you be if….never mind. I called the box office and they're holding the program over for an encore for Saturday night. They said we could still get some tickets if we wanted them. Do you want to try it again?"
"I'm willing. It's supposed to be a good program. Same time?"
"Same time. I have to go, I'll talk to you then."
They hung up the phone and went back to their usual busy schedules.
Saturday night at 6:00 pm, Dan Ross's cell phone went off. He groaned and grabbed it. If it was another problem with Goren…..he looked at the callers number. "Ross."
"It's Elizabeth. I can't go tonight. I just got a whole pile of bodies in. I'll be pulling an all nighter. I'm sorry."
"I understand. We'll do it another time." He sighed and started taking his tux back off.
The following month was busy for both departments and neither of them were able to get tickets.
The night of the third month from the initial missed date a knock sounded at Elizabeth Rodgers door. She her hair behind her ear and padded to the door in bare feet. She peeked through the window. It was Dan Ross in casual clothes.
She opened the door. "Hello."
He held up both hands. He had a bag bulging with Chinese food in one and a CD of classical music in the other. "No tux, no fancy dresses, but how about we listen anyway while we eat. It's not the same, but maybe this time we'll get to hear it."
Elizabeth laughed. "I'll take what I can get. Come on in."
