A/N: Yeah… no idea where this came from. Not beta'd. (I'm so lazy sometimes…)
He broke the news to me on a Sunday
Turned up at my apartment, just like that.
No, "Hello."
No, "How are you."
No half formed words and sentences.
No. He walked into my home, sat on the sofa, and placed a book on the table.
"Did you know that there's a rule in there that states no two members of the same forensic team are allowed to pursue a romantic relationship?"
His voice was way too casual for me. I mean, let's face it, he just told me the reason that we couldn't be together was because of a rule.
…because of a rule?!
What?!
"What?"
"Yeah. Someone decided," he flipped the front page open to read the publish date of the current rule and protocols of the Las Vegas crime lab, "wow, 18 years ago, that people working on the same shift at the lab couldn't be together," he continued. Voice still casual.
"I uh…"
Ok, so this conversation wasn't my most eloquent between us, but come on, how would you react in this situation? Really?
"So. I was sitting at home, reading over this," he nodded to the book in question, "and I started thinking. 18 years is a long time. A generation's worth. The people who wrote these rules have probably moved on by now. Maybe even died. And I started wondering when I began to let bureaucratic assholes dictate who I fell in love with."
I may have tuned out a bit after that. At any rate, it became a bit of a blur. Because let's face it, the guy is sitting on my couch telling me he thinks the rule about dating is a load of crap. (It is, but I never thought I'd hear him say that.)
And I'm also pretty sure he just told me he loved me. But hey, I could be wrong on that front.
Eventually my hearing kicked in again.
"…something I should have done a long time ago."
"Oh?"
Yup. There's my elegance, ladies and gentlemen.
"I'm going to kiss you, Sara."
I am pretty sure my mind shut down right about then, because true to his word he stood, walked the few meters to me, and kissed me.
Intimacy.
Right there.
Of course, I just found out he thought we were intimate from the first day we met.
I can't help it. I burst into laughter.
One day, we are going to be on the same page in our thinking…
…God help us all.
