They stood there.
In that darkened room, neither of them looking at the other, each of them tormented by their inner demons.
"I wish that you're life is everything that you want it to be." He suddenly spoke, his voice soft, soft as a gentle spring breeze.
"That you never have to carry more than you can bear. That no matter where you go and what you do, you always have someone beside you. That you make the choices in life that you want to make."
A sob was ripped out of her, torn out, as if her heart was dying there, in front of them.
" I wish everything for you." He told her, looking out the window, gazing into the bottomless depths of the cold dark lake.
She stood there, tears streaming down her face, her beautiful green eyes red and swollen in sadness. "I…I..I'm s-"
"I just want you to know one thing." He cut her off, still looking out the frosted glass.
There was silence, broken only by the crackle of the fire, casting a warmth that neither of them felt.
"I just want you to know, that no matter what happens…there will always be someone that loves you." He said, finally breaking his gaze from the window. "That you can love whomever you want, and that you can do whatever you want…but there will always be someone that loves you."
Knees buckling, she fell to the floor, her head bowed, as the wept into her hands. "Oh god, oh, I'm sorry, I'm so, so, sorry." She sobbed.
His breath catching in his throat, he stood, and slowly walked over to her, bending down and catching her in his arms, as he had so many times before.
"Don't be." He said gently. "He loves you. He loves you more than any other man in this world."
She fell into his chest, curling up, tears falling thicker than ever.
His arms tightened around her, as he spoke the next few words, words spoken as if they were a vow never meant to be broken, a vow that once made, would bind a life forever.
A vow that would bind a love forever.
"I don't love you."
She barely even acknowledged this blatant lie.
"I have never loved you."
With a gasp, she clutched at his robes, shaking her head at the falsehood.
"I will never love you."
Silence.
Slowly her sobs stilled.
Her tears stopped.
Time passed.
Hours and hours, they sat there, doing nothing but holding on to each other.
Until the sun broke over the edge of the sky, until the dark, inky black night was shattered into a thousand pieces by the orange, red, yellow of the sun.
And then she climbed to her feet, slowly, carefully, as if she might break.
She looked down at him.
And then she spoke three words that stayed forever in his mind, that were never far from the surface of his thoughts.
"I love you."
She slowly made her way to the door and paused, one hand on the doorknob.
And then she spoke again, five words that he made himself forget, made himself believe never came out of her mouth.
"But…I love him more."
The door creaked open and softly, softly shut, clicking firmly into place.
And he stayed there.
He lay there.
His arms still encircling the figure that had left.
He lay there.
Until the door opened once again, and a black haired, hazel eyed boy slowly came in.
"Come…come on Padfoot."
The gray-eyed boy looked up, his eyes glassy.
"It's over."
He told him.
"It's all over."
There was silence.
"I know." The other said softly.
Then he climbed to his feet.
Took the hand that was outstretched to him.
And they were gone.

I can't resist the lure of these Lily/Sirius one-shots. :| They're just too beautiful, you know? That kind of everlasting love, between both of them, and between Sirius and James isn't something that can so simply be forgotten. Something that deep is a story just waiting to be told…
Anyway.
Please read and review!!!
