Once upon a time, in the magical kingdom of Arendelle, there were two royal families who ruled together: the Beffs and the Penns. Both families had a child born with an elemental power. Carrie, the younger Beff sister, could create beautiful ice and snow; Laney, the only Penn offspring, was able to forge intense heat and flames. Since they were close friends, the two princesses used their powers to play around and build snowmen.

But as time went on, Laney's powers started to get out of hand. It was soon discovered that her powers were triggered by intense rage. One fateful day, when she was five years old, Laney had become fed up with not having enough time to play with Carrie. The princess' mother tried to reason with her, but the fiery rage in the young one's heart had transformed her into a flame monster, burning down the Penn castle and killing everyone in it.

Reluctantly, Carrie used her ice powers to freeze Laney's head, locking away her fire powers and erasing her memories of all elemental powers. But upon the king and queen's orders, Laney was to be permanently locked up in an underground cellar, fearing another fire disaster would occur. The Beffs ended up taking full responsibility for all royal duties, and peace has been maintained in Peaceville for generations since.

At least until Carrie's twelfth birthday...
