A serene look was plastered on the face a boy who was reading a thick book under a huge tree. It was a secluded area in which the teen would spend his time doing one of his favorite things to do, read. It was also a place where he could contemplate or simply savor the beautiful surroundings. He was placid… yet drowning in solitude.
Two keen eyes stared at the boy intently. Another boy, much younger this time, somehow found his way into that tranquil spot. A little spark of interest urged the child to go nearer.
"Whatcha doin?" The younger of 2 boys asked.
The other one closed his book and looked at the young one intently. "Reading." He replied in a cool demeanor, seemingly unfit for a child his age.
The younger one's deep blue eyes blinked at him cluelessly. "Reading?"
"Yes, reading" he turned back to his book, leaving the young one oblivious still.
"Is it fun? This… reading?" the young boy questioned once more refusing to leave the other in his so-called privacy.
"Why do you ask?" he inquired without tearing his gaze from the book.
"Because I want to do something fun."
The elder one grew silent and stared at the young one thoughtfully as he shut his book once more. "And why is that?"
"Because anything fun makes me happy."
The older boy brushed his straight black bangs away from his face and laughed heartily.
The young one looked hurt. "Why are you laughing? Was there something wrong with what I said?"
"What is your name, young one?"
The little boy gave a defiant stare, "My mommy calls me Kurapi-kun," Apparently, he was still quite offended.
"Well then, Kurapi-kun" The older one raised his head and stared at the boy deeply with his dull, black eyes. "What do you do for fun?"
"I play with my friends" Kurapika replied plainly, the innocence of his childhood very evident in his manner of speaking. "Sometimes I also play with my brothers and sisters"
The older boy smiled at him, amused. "Why aren't you playing right now?" he said in a playful mocking tone. Talking to kids like Kurapika seemed to please him.
Kurapika sat down on the ground beside the elder one and heaved a sigh. "Aww… we had a fight a while ago and no one wanted to play anymore." A small pout formed on the little boy's lips.
The older one smiled sarcastically. "That's why you come all the way here under my secret hideout just to annoy me?"
Kurapika nodded vigorously. "Uh hu." The young one fell silent for a while. "What does your mommy call you?"
"My… mommy?" the older one repeated.
"Yeah…"
"I don't have a mommy anymore."
"Oh" Kurapi's face fell into a frown. "What do other people call you then?"
"My friends call me dancho…" The older boy laughed at the surprised look in Kurapika's face. "But you can call me Kuroro"
"Kuroro huh?" Kurapika repeated, a playful smirk forming on his face. "Funny name…"
"Kurapi-kun sounds weird as well…" the other retorted with that same mocking tone in his voice.
"My name is Kurapika"
"Kurapika huh? Sounds better."
"What about the reading?" Kurapika pressed eagerly.
"Oh this?" Kuroro laughed once more. He seemed to have laughed more than usual that day with the little kid with him. "Have you ever gone to school?"
"Not yet…" young Kurapika shook his head sadly. "But my mommy said I will next year"
"So you do not know how to read?"
He shook his head once more. "But I'd like to learn." He looked up into Kuroro's eyes.
Kuroro's eyes seemed to shine as he grinned at the young boy, "In that case, I'll read to you instead…" he ruffled Kurapika's blond hair playfully and opened his book.
Author's notes: WAII~!!! Chibi-Kurapi and Kuroro-kun together!!! *swoons* I'd like to do a fan art on this one… ^__^' anyway, nothing much… just that Kurapika and Kuroro are characters created by Yoshihiro Togashi.
