Why didn't you come visit me at the hospital?

The unspoken question hung heavy in the air, as Greg stared sadly at his co-worker and best friend.

Why didn't you come visit me at the hospital?

Greg thought to himself again. But the words would not form. His voice would not come. He couldn't bring himself to ask.

Why didn't you come visit me at the hospital?

But Nick didn't need to hear him say it. It was clear. Nick knew the first person Greg should have awoken to while he lay broken on the hospital bed was Nick. He should have been there for his best friend, along with the rest of his co-workers.

Nick wanted to look away. He couldn't stand to keep looking into Greg's hurt eyes. How could he have been so stupid? After all Greg had done for him, he'd let him down.

They stood there for what seemed to both as eternity. One pair of eyes full of sorrow and the other guilty.

Why didn't you come visit me at the hospital?

Nick found his voice first.

"I'm sorry." He told the younger man.

Greg didn't reply, just waited.

Nick continued, "I just..couldn't.." He struggled to find the words.

"Couldn't what?" Greg asked calmly after a few seconds.

Nick brought his hands to his face, suddenly desperate. "I couldn't go see you in the hospital." He began, restlessly walking around the Greg's office. "Just…just to hear a doctor tell me I might lose someone I care about. I'm sorry" He stilled.

The words had come out rushed, and Nick couldn't bring himself to meet Greg's gaze, his own fixed intently on the lab floor.

I'm sorry.

Nick replayed the words in his head, frowning. He was sure the two words wouldn't fix what he'd done. He won't forgive me. Nick thought. I left him when he needed me the most. I don't deserve his forgiveness.

No words were uttered for long moments. Nick wanted Greg to speak. To tell him he was an idiot. To tell him he hated him.

He'd already made up his mind that Greg would not forgive him. He waited for him to speak up and confirm his assumption.

When minutes passed by and Greg remained silent, Nick bought himself to meet his eyes.

He was rewarded with Greg's most brilliant smile. The Texan was taken aback. "You don't hate me?" he asked bewildered.

Greg, who had turned around and was rummaging around his messy office for his vest, scoffed at his friend's comment.

"Yeah," He said as he turned around to look at Nick. "Cuz being told you're cared about can really make you hate a person." His sarcasm was met by a relived laugh, and everything was back to normal.
