If you haven't seen the episode where Kate dies, do yourself a favor and DO NOT READ!
Done by memory and at 4 am...Please excuse how lame this is but I couldn't sleep knowing this wasn't in some form of writing. I wanted the ending to be short and a little bit humorous. I think that's how Kate would have wanted it xD
"I'm out." Gibbs is about two yards ahead, messing with his gun while Tony looks around for any more shooters.
"Me too," I say, inspecting my rifle. My legs hurt. Protection detail is a bitch. Tony takes a round out of his pocket and hands it to Gibbs.
I'm finally starting to catch my breath when I hear metal creaking. My neck nearly snaps as I look up from my gun, just in time to see a man pointing his gun right at Gibbs from behind a shed.
"Shooter!" I drop the rifle and sprint full speed to Gibbs. This can't be happening. God, please tell me this isn't happening.
Right when I jump I hear a gunshot, and I feel the bullet hit me right in the ribs. I make no effort to catch myself as I fall on my side in a graceless heap. Ouch. Ow ow ow ow ow. Ow.
More gunshots. They're quiet. All I can hear is my pulse beating in my head. I curl up a little at the pain in my side from the impact. Ugh. You're welcome, Gibbs.
The gunshots stop. I make no effort to even move other than closing my eyes. The sun is too bright and the pain is too strong.
"Kate?" I hear Gibbs call from wherever he is. Footsteps under my pulse.
I try to speak, or at least move to let him know I'm not dead. I don't want him to worry. He makes it over with Tony before I have a chance. Somebody rolls me onto my back and unzips my NCIS jacket. I try to force my eyes back open, but it wont work.
I hear them sigh in unison. They saw the armor had stopped the bullet. "You okay?" Tony asks while Gibbs pushes hair out of my face. My pulse slows down and the pain starts to subside.
"Ow..." I manage. I open my eyes and glare at him, "I just got shot at point blank range, DiNozzo...What do you think?"
"You're not going to pilates class tomorrow?"
"Ow..." I squeeze my eyes back shut as I adjust to my brain having to function again. "Ugh..."
Gibbs takes my hands while Tony props me up. I don't want to stand up, I don't even want to move. But, soon enough I'm up on my own again.
"Protection detail's over, Kate." Gibbs grins in relief. I'm still trying to adjust to standing upright.
"You did good!" I can hear Tony smiling behind me.
"For once," Gibbs says, "DiNozzo's right."
I laugh as I return to my senses. "Wow. I thought I'd die before I ever heard a compliment-"
Ouch.
