(A/N: This is just a short little idea I have, spun off 4.04, since I hated the ending so much, just so frustrating seeing Dan and Serena being separated by circumstances. It's starting from the part when Dan sees Nate and Serena together and says that some people don't have to choose. Hope you guys like it.)

"Dan, wait. You're right, some people don't have to choose. I admit, when I came back to New York, I didn't know who to choose between you and Nate. And seeing you with Vanessa, Nate with Juliet, it hurt. Can we go somewhere quieter, I don't want tonight to end this way." Serena looked at Dan, her expression was pained, somehow, it just looked familiar, the same hurt expression she couldn't hold back when she confronted him two years ago, when she told him she couldn't just turn it off even though they had broken up.

"Please?" Serena reached for his hand, blinking slowly and looking at him, and he knew he had to do what he had to.

"Downstairs." Dan turned on his heels before she made contact, and made his way through the crowd, heading for the staircase.

They found a small room, clearly intended for private discussions, and Dan sat in an armchair, his expression was cold, and his eyes hard. Serena knew that this was probably the last chance she would ever get, and she had already made her choice, but perhaps, she had always, just that she never realised it.

"Dan, what you saw, me with Nate, just now, it isn't what it must have looked like. He told me he thinks he broke up with Juliet, but all I said was that if he needed someone to talk to, I would be here. Since this afternoon, I've decided, if there ever was a need to, that you're the one that I should be with. I know that there have been times in the past that I've taken you for granted, but never again. I just needed to know that you felt that way towards me too, and I know it couldn't have been easy to admit that this afternoon."

"Serena, before Georgina came into my life this summer, I was ready to let go of everything I had and go after you to France, to tell you that I would do anything just to be with you. I love you, and I guess, even when I'm with Vanessa, there's a part of me that still does."

"I love you, Dan."

(A/N: I said it would be short!)
