"So where do you go every night?" Scorpius asked, as he moved his queen one square forward. Albus looked up from the chess board, surprised.
"What do you mean, Scor?" he retorted, trying to focus on the game. He had thought he had been secretive enough about the whole thing that his friend wouldn't notice.
"Come on. I saw you weren't in bed last night. And the night before that. Where do you sneak off to?"
Albus suddenly stopped playing and pushed the pieces off the board in to his bag. "Nowhere," he said, packing up the chess set to leave. Scorpius frowned. He hadn't expected that the simple question would offend Albus.
"Al? I was just curious..." he said, his voice trailing off. Albus paused and sighed.
"It's nothing, really," he replied. "All right. I'll show you tonight. We can both sneak out."
"Really?" Scorpius asked, excited.
"Of course. Just don't fall asleep, okay?"
There was little chance of that happening. Scorpius was extremely curious by nature and he couldn't wait to get through the day. He kept wondering not only where Al went, but how he managed to escape without any of the patrolling prefects or teachers noticing.
When nighttime rolled around, Scorpius waited impatiently for all the other students to be asleep. Then, he heard a soft knocking sound at the foot of his bed. He quickly got up and saw Albus, or rather, Albus' head, crouching there. He nearly had a start, at seeing his friend headless.
Then, remembering what his father had once told him, he quickly realised what was happening. Albus motioned him to come down, and he obeyed, sliding off the bed. His friend threw the invisibility cloak over the both of them.
"So that's how you do it," Scorpius whispered, still in awe.
Albus nodded. "Never hurts to be a little invisible." They began slowly walking out of the dorm. Scorpius followed closely, afraid of the cloak slipping off.
He walked as is friend led him through different hallways and into alcoves, until they reached a corridor which seemed empty.
"Now watch," said Albus, turning around and walking back across the path they had just come through. He did this three times, with Scorpius utterly confused and struggling to keep up, until he saw the door appear in the wall.
Albus quickly opened it and they both slipped inside. then, Albus threw off the cloak.
In front of them stood an endless room of thing.
"The Room of Requirement, Albus explained. And that's the Mirror of Erised. There's lots of other things in here too. Books, potions, anything at all, really."
Scorpius had stopped listening after the second sentence. He was gazing intently at the Mirror, mesmerised by the image it showed him. It was him, with a certain red-haired Weasley witch by his side, looking older but happy. He wondered if this could ever come true.
"...Scor? Earth to Scorpius!" The voice broke into his thoughts and he turned to Albus who was smirking at him. "Well, what did you see?" Al asked.
Scorpius shook his head. Probably best to not tell Rose's cousin about the image, even if he was his best friend.
What must have been almost and hour later, but felt only like a few minutes, the two Sllytherins opened the door again and returned to the hallway, only to find a very angry Headmistress McGonagall blocking their way.
"Uh, oh," Scorpius whispered.
"That's quite right, Mr Malfoy," replied the Headmistress, the look on her face telling them this wouldn't end well.
