Percy awoke in a bed that was not his. He was not surprised, however. He had started getting used to it, of late. Waking up every day, in the satin quilt, looking up at those ceiling lights that he could never afford, all while she lay next to him, still asleep. He wondered why he always ended up waking before her. Force of habit, perhaps. He sighed.
Slowly taking off the quilt from his side off the bed, he sat up. He often asked himself how he had ended up with her, of all people. He supposed in a weird way, it made sense, but he could imagine everyone he knew reacting terribly. They didn't know, of course. Nor would they.
As he stood up to grab his coat from the chair, he turned and looked at her. She looked beautiful, even asleep. That aura of grace and elegance never seemed to leave her.
Then, he decided to do something unusual. Their relationship had oscillated between raw and poised. There never had been any place for tenderness. Perhaps he could change that. He walked over to her side of the bed and planted a kiss on her forehead.
She awoke with a start, and stared in confusion at his face looking down at her.
"Good morning, Narcissa," he smiled.
She smiled back.
Perhaps this wasn't that crazy after all.
