natural disaster.

katniss & gale

( what happens when a tornado meets a volcano )

:: for Lostliveson4eva, whom I love. ::

disclaimer: not mine.

i.

She is a tornado, all whirling emotions and calamity. You can see her coming, but always just before it's too late. She stirs up everything and leaves a mess wherever she's been.

He is a volcano, all pent up anger and unpredictable and inevitable disaster. His ire is always bubbling just below the surface, and when you provoke him, he erupts, and you can practically feel the flames burning you up.

(Together, they create the worst kind of natural disaster.)

ii.

Volcanoes contain lava, and lava is a kind of fire, right? And she's the girl on fire. Which means that they go together.

He tells himself this every second of every day, trying to convince himself that he's better for her than Moony Mellark.

(He tries, but he fails.)

iii.

She refuses to let him in, even though she knowsknowsknows that he's already wormed his way into her heart, and he doesn't plan on leaving any time soon.

Because it's Gale, and he's so stubborn.

(But so is she.)

iv.

"You can't fight fire with fire, Gale."

His mother always told him this whenever he was angry about something. Most of the time with the Capitol.

You can't fight fire with fire.

She is fire, fire and sparks and catastrophe and onebigbigmess.

He's fire, and that's why they can't be together, why she has to be with her Boy With The Bread, because she's fire too.

(And fire plus fire just makes so much more fire.)

v.

There is a part of her that wants him, the one who saved her so long ago, the one who saved her in the Games, the one that saves her from herself.

There is another part of her that wants him, her hunting partner, her closest and oldest friend, the one who knows her better than possibly she knows herself.

But she knows deep down inside that they can't be together, because them together is destruction. Destruction and death.

(And disaster.)

vi.

He creates a bomb. A bomb that will win them this war.

He knows that this bomb will change things. Bad things will happen, but everything will be good after it all.

(His fire kills innocent people, and perhaps the most innocent person of all.)

vii.

After, he's offered a good job in District 2, one that pays more than any job that ever existed in Twelve.

He moves there, settles down, has the family he's always dreamed of.

(Except one member is so much different than she was in his dreams.)

viii.

She moves back to District 12, even though every instinct alive in her body screams nononono not there, anywhere but there.

And even though it hurts, God, it hurts soso bad, she stays anyway, stays because even though it's perhaps the most painful thing she's ever done, it's familiar, and that comforts her in an odd sort of way.

She and he grow back together, she and her Boy With The Bread. And she loves him, she loves him so much.

(But even after all he's done, a part of her will always love him too.)

ix.

She is a tornado.

He is a volcano.

(And that's why they can't be together.)
