Name: Longing to Belong

Author: Jes aka Cozy Heart Penguin

Chapter: 1/1 (One of my friends said I should continue this, but I think it is nice as just a

one-parter. Tell me what you think and I might add more.)

Reviews: Are nice, flames are used to feed my pyro obsession.

Summary: One-shot futurefic. Jess-centric. Short. Moves around a lot. Kind of dark,

more like just really unhappy. Does make fun of some cliched R/J themes. Mention of

Rory/Dave. Rating just a precaution.

Longing to Belong

Evanescent. That was a good word to describe him. 'Vanishing or likely to

vanish like vapor' said one dictionary. Another said 'Quickly disappearing'. It didn't

matter what definition you used. It was still him. Ephemeral. Elusive, passing, short-

lived, they all worked.

After leaving California, Jess had become a drifter, traveling around not unlike his

father had evidently done after leaving New York. Jess had returned to Stars Hollow for

a while, tried to patch up what he would come to refer to as 'The Rory Situation', but

too quickly he lost interest in trying to be the perfect boyfriend for her. That wasn't him.

He had traveled to Canada, looked up some old friends who had apparently

moved there from New York. Upon meeting up with them he found that most were so

into drugs that there were prices on their heads. High ones. He never the less stayed

there for a time, attempting to help his former friends out of the gutter. Sadly enough, it

didn't work.

After his failed heroic endeavor, Jess moved on to Washington, Seattle to be

exact, and ventured the life of a writer. He got an agent, came up with an ideal storyline.

The novel was actually a story detailing his days in Stars Hollow. It was mostly focused

on his romance with Rory. Unfortunately for him, though, the editors had clearly read

way too many cliched 'good girl/ bad boy' stories for them to have any interest in it. Jess

was forced to abandon it and move on.

Jess returned to Stars Hollow once more, just to 'check in'. It was purely

coincidental that at the time Rory, just out of college, was making wedding plans. What

really shocked Jess, however, was the news of who exactly Rory was marrying. Dave

Rygalski. Lane's ex-boyfriend. It turned out that Mrs. Kim really had forced Lane into

marriage with a Korean doctor. Years later, Jess heard that both couples ended up

divorcing.

He moved again after attending the wedding, this time to Florida. There he met,

moved in, and 'fell in love' with a sexy blonde, who kind of reminded him of Shane in a

way. She wasn't quite as pouty or needy, but he still saw Shane in her. She did,

however, hold her own. She was a top executive at a bank, pulled in hundreds of

thousands a year. He envied her, in a way, but she did make it so he needn't work, so he

didn't really care all that much. He did care, however, when he found that she had been

cheating on him with one of her interns. Sure, he was sleeping with her secretary, but her

cheating on him? Never. So he left.

And then, after all of his attempts to be happy, to feel he belonged, Jess finally

returned to the one place he was supposed to be in all along. His home, his life.

Everything that was meant for him. No, not Stars Hollow.

New York.
