Just a small piece I wrote for HC-Bingo last year. The prompt was "Loss of Hearing". Hope it's enjoyable!

Hugo's Spell

Silence. That was all Lily could hear after Hugo had performed a spell very wrongly. She could see his mouth moving, but no sound seemed to come from his mouth.

"I can't hear you." She said, but when she couldn't hear her own voice, she started to panic. Was she… deaf? Was it permanent? Or would it become normal once again?

He saw Hugo's face get paler than normal, showing even more the collection of freckles on his nose and cheeks. She would think it was lovely, if she wasn't so desperate with the perspective of never hearing a sound again.

Grabbing her by the hand, he pulled her down the stairs, seeming just as desperate as she was. He seemed relieved to see his sister, Albus and Scorpius sitting on Ravenclaw's table at the Great Hall. Lily stopped to admire the combination once again. Even though she was already used to it, it was always interesting to see a Gryffindor, a Ravenclaw and a Slytherin so close.

Hugo said some words, gesticulating crazily. The more he spoke, the more Rose's face got red. Soon, she was screaming with her brother, while Scorpius and Albus just laughed, holding their bellies as if it hurt to laugh so much. Lily was already on the verge of tears when Rose carefully held her hand, reassuringly.

Everything will be alright. She said slowly, emphasising every syllable so Lily could read the words on her lips.

The Potter girl nodded, wiping away the tears on formation. She trusted her cousin, much more than she trusted her own brothers.

Delicately, Rose guided her through the halls until they reached the Healing wing, where a very old Madame Pomfrey still treated students with great care.

Professor Longbottom was there as well, and Lily saw the worried look on his face while Rose (presumably) explained the situation for both of them. Madame Pomfrey seemed like she was ready to scream with someone.

She pointed a chair to Lily and gave her a very strange looking potion to drink. The thing was purple and boiled with a life of its own, but Lily just closed her eyes and drank the whole thing in three gulps. Incredibly enough, the medicine tasted like fresh strawberries, a fruit she had always liked very much.

It took only two minutes for her to be able to hear Rose's voice.

"… and he is so irresponsible! I still can't believe he was performing a spell without supervision! What if Madame Pomfrey couldn't heal her? What would he do then? How would I explain to aunt Ginny and uncle Harry that their nephew took away their daughter hearing?"

"Hey, it's okay, Rose, I'm fine now."

"Oh, Lily!" the red-haired hugged her cousin. "Thank Merlin, I was so worried. My stupid brother! Please, promise me you won't ever stay alone with him in such conditions!"

"I promise." Suddenly, it was enough for little Lily. She just cried while hugging Rose.

"It's okay, now." Rose whispered in a suiting tone. "He will be properly punished for it."

Lily nodded, feeling so distressed it was okay if Gryffindor lost some points. Hugo really deserved.

"Rose… Just don't tell mom and dad, okay? They will be mad and I don't want mom yelling at uncle Ron again."

Rose chuckled.

"Oh, Lily. They will find out, you know. One way or another."

And Lily soon discovered she would have to take better care of her ears for the rest of the school year, since her mother's screams could be just outrageous.
