Prologue:
Honey, why don't you gather some berries?" Mother asked. Sokaita was gazing at the sun, each miniscule explosion of volcanic gases fascinating to her eyes.
It was a very sunny, breezy day. Spring was just starting to be reborn in everything around them. The blossom trees had a few buds already, waiting to emerge. The chicken frogs and turtle ducks were starting to fill in the ponds and streams. The Rogues getting out the rest of their saved food stored from winter and using it up, Sokaita and her parents included.
"Mom, I...couldn't I look at it a bit longer? It's so pretty...."
Her mother looked to her child in utter audacity. "Look at what, soki?"
"The sun. It's so pretty…and bright...isn't it?" Sokaita's green eyes couldn't budge from the sight. The blue sky above them was like a soothing background of color, the swirling clouds white puffs of beauty.
Her mother squinted. "I don't see how you can actually see the sun in the first place..." she covered her hands over her eyes. "You shouldn't stare at it for so long; it will make you go blind."
Sokaita looked down unwillingly when her mother tugged down on her arm. "But---"
"Here," her mother said, handing her a basket. "We're low on dangle berries. Go pick some so I can make a pie with them." Her mother began pushing her towards the trees. "Go on. Be back before the sun is shining over the oasis two streams down from here. I don't need that many."
"Sure," Sokaita replied glumly, and started walking down the dirt path.
The trees overhead were so dense and thick, the leaves completely blocked out the sunlight. The air was filled with the sound of hawk monkeys noises and the fluttering of dove mice wings.
Life was simple in the rogue
Sokaita giggled when one little dove mouse flew off course and landed in her hair. It squeaked and struggled like a fly in a dragon spider's web. "It's okay little dove mouse," she whispered softly, and gently separated the thin strands of her short cropped black hair from the little wings.
"Careful careful," she whispered. "There you go," she said as the little dove mouse finally was untangled and landed back-down on Sokaita's palm. He giggled when it looked up to her in what looked like bewilderment. It sniffed her hand for a few seconds and then took off to soar the sky again.
