"What am I gonna do?"

Scar stared down at his sobbing nephew with piercing acid green eyes and spoke. "Run away, Simba." He spoke in a low, urgent voice. The golden pelted cub recoiled a few paces, his face pained, disorientated, and guilt-ridden. He paused to again glance at his father's face, still willing him to wake up. "Run!" Scar repeated, more urgently this time. "Run away, and never return!" A look of fear came to the cub's face then, and he turned tail and ran into the dirt-cloud fog that had arisen from the wildebeest stampede, disappearing from view.

A subtle smirk came to Scar's maw, and, without even turning, he gave an order to the hyenas he knew were behind him. "Kill him." With a rally of harsh, aggressive barks, Shenzi, Banzai and Ed sprung forward, tearing past Scar and after Simba, disappearing into the distance too. The russet lion remained motionless until the sounds of his snapping, growling minions faded, then he tilted his head and cast his eyes idly to the deceased form of his brother who lay beside him.

As he was, lying so still, so quiet, so weak…it was almost hard to believe it was his brother. Mufasa had always been a show off in Scar's eyes. He had always been bigger than him, stronger than him, 'Daddy's favourite' who got everything while he was left in the dust wondering why he even existed. Well. No more. No more would he be simply 'Mufasa's younger brother'. Now he would be king, like he had always deserved to be!

His eyes locked on his brother's face. A pleasant feeling of malicious victory caused his chest to swell and a light shiver to spasm through his body. The smirk came to his maw again, only more obvious, more pronounced this time. So long he had planned this. So long he had willed his brother's downfall with every bone in his body. And yet…now he had actually done it, he almost couldn't believe it. He wasn't quite sure if this was reality or some delicious dream that he would wake up from in disappointment.

He blinked slowly, and blinked again. He even briefly dug his claws into his foreleg. No. It was real. The enormity of the situation suddenly reared its head and hit Scar with full force. His smirk dropped from his face, to be replaced with his usual sombre expression, but with one difference. His eyes. They held the briefest twinkle of sorrow for just a moment. His brother was actually dead…Mufasa was…

The emotion in Scar's eyes was gone as quickly as it had come as he turned them away from his brother. He stood, paused to stretch in a leisurely manner as if having just awoken from a nap, then padded forward to make his way out of the gorge. The hyenas would all meet him at Pride Rock. He had an announcement to make.
