A Boy Unknown
Mary 2nd, 1983
"Is my baby going to be normal?" Mary Winchester asked. She sat in a hospital bed, her curly blonde hair was long on her shoulder. Her husband, who stood beside her holding a baby balloon, looked confused and distraught.
"Your baby will be fine. It should grow up completely normal, and we can perform a surgery to make the genitalia more average," the doctor explained. He looked down at Mary's arms and the bald infant cooing and watching the mother with wide blue eyes.
"You haven't even told us if our baby is a girl or a boy," the father, John, said.
"You'll have to decide that for yourselves," the doctor said.
Mary and John walked through the front door of their house together, carrying the car-seat that held their second baby.
"Mommy, daddy! Do I have a little brother or a little sister?" Dean, their four-year old asked as he ran to their sides.
"Dean, meet your baby brother, Sammy," Mary said with a soft smile.

"Daddy, why does Sammy's pee-pee look like that?" Dean asked as he watched his father change the one month old baby's diaper. John hadn't been prepared for this question. He had been expecting the, How did the baby get in mommy's tummy, or the, How is the baby gonna get out of there, which hadn't come.
Why can't Dean be like a normal four-year old? John thought to himself. Not prepared, he obviously answered honestly. "Because Sammy's too small for his surgery. He'll get it in November."
"So if he gets surgery, he'll be like me?" Dean asked.
"Exactly. Now, let's get your brother ready for bed and let him sleep, Ace." John replaced Sam's diaper, placing him in his blue onesie and putting him in his crib. "Night, Sam," John said, taking his oldest out of the room.

"Let's say goodnight to your brother," Mary said, walking into her youngest son's nursery with her oldest in tow.
"Night, Sam," Dean said, pulling himself nearly inside the crib to kiss Sam on the forehead.
"Goodnight, Love," Mary said, kissing her son's forehead like Dean had done moments before.
"Hey, Dean," John said as he stood in the doorframe. Dean turned excitedly.
"Daddy!" he called out, running to his father. John grabbed him, lifting the boy into a hug.
"Hey, buddy," John said, smiling with that fatherly pride all fathers get. "So what do you think, you think Sammy's ready to toss around a football yet?"
"No, daddy," Dean laughed at the thought.
"No," John mocked with a 'sudden realization' that his boy was far too young to do that. Mary laughed, walking up to her boys.
Mary smiled, watching her perfect family. Sam had just had his surgery the day before and was recovering from officially being a male. Mary and John had both been advised to be gentle with Sam's genitals when they changed his diaper and bathed him. "You got him?" she asked.
"I got him," John confirmed as Mary walked out of the room. Dean rested his head on his father's shoulder, John rubbing his back as he looked at his baby boy in his crib, wrapped up in a blue blanket. The baby, who's eyes had faded from blue and turned into a blue-green color, and gained brown curls, watched his father. "Sweet dreams, Sam," John said, listening to the baby coo and make noises before shutting off the light and walking out of the bedroom and putting his oldest to bed.
