Chapter one
The diagnosis
Thirteen year old Virgil Tracy moved in his seat in the doctor's office waiting room. He and his four brothers had been brought in by their father for their yearly check up a week ago, and the doctor had asked to do some other tests on Virgil, he had some things that he had heard from Virgil's father that had gotten him wondering about something. So there Virgil sat, all alone, clenching and unclenching his fists on the chair wondering what on earth was taking his father and the doctor so long.
Virgil's mind suddenly took him away from that waiting room; he started thinking of his brothers, who were back on their private island waiting for news. Virgil could just see Scott his sixteen year old brother pasing by the phone or by the pool, like he always did when he was nervous. He could see his fifteen year old brother, John staring out of his telescope even if it wasn't dark yet. His mind turned to Gordon, his eleven year old brother, if he knew Gordon he was in the pool swimming laps, he wouldn't even know they were there unless they dove into the water after him. Finally Virgil's thoughts landed on Alan, his nine year old brother, being the youngest Alan was spoiled and would do anything that involved anything fast.
"Virgil?" the voice startled Virgil out of his thoughts.
"Virgil?" the voice said again.
"Sorry dad, I was lost in my thoughts," Virgil said as he looked to his father.
Jeff Tracy looked at his middle son and gave him a small smile, "Come on son, the doctor needs to talk to you."
Virgil sucked in his breath so hard he coughed a little, Jeff patted him on the back, "It's okay, come on."
Virgil got up and followed his father down the hall and into the doctor's main office. Virgil had never been in this room before; it looked really cool with all the lines of books on the shelves and the desk right in the middle of the room, when the doctor came in Virgil's eyes focused on him.
"Hello Virgil," the doctor said nicely as he sat down behind his desk.
"Hello Doctor Peters," Virgil said quietly.
"Well Virgil I've already talked to your dad about this, so I'm just going to go ahead and tell you what's going on and what we are going to do about, okay," Doctor Peters said with a small smile.
"Okay," Virgil said with a nod of his head.
"Well you know all thoughs different things your dad told me about, about you always being thirsty, and your breath smelling sweet," Doctor Peters asked looking to Virgil to make sure he was listening.
"Yes," Virgil said.
"Well there is a condition that has thoughs symptoms though I wanted to be sure before I told you," Doctor Peters said.
"That's what all the other tests were for," Virgil said knowingly.
"Yes," Doctor Peters said and then turned to Jeff, "Jeff, do you want to tell him?"
"Yes, thanks Dave," Jeff said.
"You're welcome," the doctor said as he left the room.
"Dad, what's he mean by condition?" Virgil asked looking at his father.
"Virgil, do you remember what Grandpa Tracy had?" Jeff asked turning to his son.
"Yes, he was a type 2 diabetic, why?" Virgil asked his voice beginning to fill with fear.
"Well Virgil, Grandpa was a type 2 diabetic, and I'm afraid you are type 1," Jeff said as a few tears trailed down his face.
Virgil's tears ran unchecked down his face, he knew how type 2 was caused and what it could do to you, his thoughts began to go crazy and he began to hyperventilate. Would type 1 do the same thing as type 2?
