I don't own anything about Harry Potter. It all belongs to the brilliant J.K. Rowling, as well as to David Yates, who directed the 6th movie that features the scene this was inspired by.
That stupid heart. Just a little heart on a fogged-up spot on the cabin door.
She had been in a great mood before then. She was on the Hogwarts Express, heading home for the holiday vacation. She would be with her parents. She could enjoy doing things the muggle way. And best yet, she'd be away from Ron and Lavender's ridiculous relationship.
And then she saw… that stupid heart.
Clearly, it had been Lavender who had put it there. The little heart on the glass door had a sort of feminine touch. R + L. Oh, for god's sake…
The boy she loved was with another girl, and even worse, it was a girl she couldn't stand.
Hermione looked up from the door to see Harry and Ron looking at her. Harry had a miserable look on his face, filled with pity and disappointment for her. Ron just looked… like Ron. He was embarrassed, yet sad. But he was obviously trying to hide it with a fake strong face. It was as if he wanted Hermione to flat out know that he was with Lavender, no matter how many birds Hermione cursed at him or how many times she turned her head to look away or how many nights she cried herself to sleep.
Not that he knew about the last one.

That stupid heart. Ron looked disgustedly at it and shook his head. He had liked the attention at first, but now he was getting really annoyed by it. He subtly shook his head and smiled at Lavender so she would go away. His smirk satisfied her and she mouthed "I love you" before she flounced off.
And then… Hermione. Perfect Hermione. The girl he had loved since fourth year walked by and froze in front of the cabin door. Maybe she was coming to sit in their cabin. Maybe she just wanted to say hi. Maybe she was coming to kick Harry out of the cabin so she could confess her undying love for him.
Okay, maybe not the last one.
Ron had missed her terribly. She was still friendly with Harry, but she and Ron hadn't spoken in weeks. He was so upset, but he'd be damned if he ever let Hermione know.
So instead he put up a front. A front that he was happy with Lavender and Hermione's misery meant nothing to him. After all, she had launched evil little birds at him. It would make sense that he felt that way, so even though he didn't really, nobody could blame him.
He tried to convince himself that it was a good situation, but he knew he wouldn't be happy until he and Hermione made up.
