Niles realized then and there that he was finished. Done. He would never love another woman as he had loved Daphne, nor did he care to. Once she walked away from the balcony he knew that love was simply not in the cards for him. He didn't know what he would do next, but he knew one thing: he wished he had never met Daphne Moon.
The thought pained him to think, but it had to be thought. Without Daphne, there would be no heartbreak, no misery, no hating himself for loving a woman as much as he loved her. If only there were some way he could go back and undo meeting her.

It was a Monday, and he knew that he should stop by Frasier's to check on him and their dad. But for some reason, something told him that he ought not to. He didn't know why he didn't' feel like going; he wasn't a superstitious man, but on that cool Seattle day instead of visiting Frasier, he called him. Some news about a new caregiver for their dad, some arguments between Frasier and Martin, but other than that, no real developments. He didn't give it a second thought.
So he went about his day, not giving Frasier or his father a thought in the world. Today was going to be a good day; little did he know how his life was going to change-forever.
