Not all treasure is silver and gold, mate.

Ben Cartwright gazed at the fireplace, the fire giving off a golden glow. His sons were out of the house. His oldest two, Adam and Hoss, were rounding up a couple of stray cattle in the far pasture. Joe, his youngest, was taking care of a few business matters in Placerville, leaving Ben alone with Hop Sing, the Chinese cook, for the evening.

Outside, Ben knew, the stars sparkled in the night sky. The wind made a slight breeze, playing with the curtains, but the great room was quite warm and cozy.

On this particular night, Ben sat in front of the fireplace, thinking of his sons: serious, book-smart Adam, large, kind-hearted Hoss, and mischievous, impetuous Little Joe. Those three boys were as different as their mothers, but also much more alike than anyone would care to admit.

Adam, Hoss, and Joe were more precious to their father than all the money in the world. For some men, silver and gold were valuable treasure; for Ben Cartwright, it was his sons. Ben was about ready to turn in for the night, when the front door flew open.

"Hoss?" asked Ben in surprise.

"Howdy, Pa. Me and Adam found them strays. They didn't go far as we thought."

"Where's Adam?"

"Takin' care o' the horses," said Hoss.

Adam came in, Joe close on his heels.

"Joe? I thought you was in Placerville?" asked Ben.

"I was, but I got that business taken care of early, so I decided to come straight home," said Joe.

As he went to bed that night, Ben thanked God for bringing his sons home safely, and for giving him his three treasures in the first place.
