Chapter One: Remembrance

The moonlit night was a rare treasure, one that I thoroughly enjoyed having. My delicate-looking hand dangled out the window of Charlie's cruiser. Outside, the dense forests of Washington passed by in the black night. The guttural howl of a wolf echoed through my new hometown of Forks. Charlie glanced over at me, trying to monitor my reactions to the new place. It was a step down from Phoenix, more rural and rustic with an old-town feel. Leaving my mother Renee and her new husband Phil was hard, but it was again my choice.

"So... Bells. How was the trip? I heard flying these days costs quite a lot. I should probably reimburse Phil. Courtesy... you know." Charlie's mumbling voice was bashful. I could tell talking was not his forte.

How was I to tell Charlie that it wasn't necessary? "Actually, Phil used his frequent-flier miles. From baseball. You shouldn't repay him. I'm sure he doesn't mind at all." My voice quivered as I talked. Probably because I was used to being the quiet one, known not for keeping conversations going but for not engaging in them at all.

"Right.. er. Frequent-flier miles. Just tell him thanks for me." He looked away and concentrated on the road ahead. Washington's roads were all wooded and spiraling, I noticed, which could easily make a person like me dizzied. The rest of the way home was quiet, except for the gentle lapping of wind.

Based on the slight conversation we'd had, staying with Charlie was the right choice, since I needed time to think my fluctuating life through. We only began to talk again as Forks finally came into view.

The homey town, situated on the Olympic Peninsula, was my birthplace and where Charlie, my father, had been living since my mother left him. Shaded by tall, dewy trees and mountainous land, I had chosen for myself a destiny that involved much annoying climate intervention. Forks is the rainiest place in the continental United States and I am not very attune to this fact, being from Phoenix.

I promise to write more later! First Fan-fic... tell me if you like my wrting style. This is how I would have written Twilight using SM's ideas and characters. Not the same story though... the vampire love thing is what is used!!! Thanks
