"Jane," Adam explained as carefully as he could to the tear-stained girl, "I'm with Iris now. Iris. You had your chance, and I'm sorry that you realized things too late but I'm over you."
"Adam," Joan pleaded, "I can't get that kiss out of my mind."
"Then maybe we should cool off the friendship a little bit too. Goodbye Joan."
He left her in the hallway, causing even more sobs and half the student population to think she was nuts. Well, they already thought she was nuts, this was just more confirmation. In the distance she saw Cute Guy God leaning against a locker, watching her. She charged up to him.
"You know if it's all the same to you, I'd really like to be left alone right now."
"It's not the same to me and you are never alone Joan," he told her. "You feel my presence around you always, regardless of whether I chose to come to you in a physical form."
"It's so unfair," Joan sobbed.
"Yes," he agreed, "it is. I don't work off of fair. You should know that by now. I work off of love, balance and perfection."
"Then what was so terribly wrong with me having a little more love in my life?"
"Nothing Joan. And you will. It just might not come in the form you expect."
Cute Guy God took her in his arms and eased her sobs. "I have a mission for you."
"Oh great," she muttered sarcastically.
"Bring a tub of Ben and Jerry's to the top of the hill tonight."
***************************
Joan reached the top of the hill, frozen treats in hand. Cute Guy God was waiting for her.
"Since when is ice cream a part of the divine plan?"
"It isn't," he explained, "I just thought it might make you feel better." He sat next to her and shared a bite of it. "Look at the stars Joan. There are too many to even count. Too many to take in. Look at the trees, the grass, the ground. You are surrounded by beauty. Surrounded by me. How can you possibly feel alone?"
"Trees can't give me a hug. Or a kiss. And neither can stars," Joan pointed out.
"I know," he told her. "But this world is more than just trees and stars." He wrapped his arm around her and leaned in to kiss her.
Joan pulled away. "Isn't this a no-no? I mean, does God have office romances?"
"You haven't forgotten Mary, have you?"
"No, but if it's all the same to you I'd really rather steer clear of the immaculate conception thing. I'm still in high school you know, and totally not ready. Plus my parents would totally freak."
"No immaculate conception," he promised. "Just a kiss. To show you your not alone."
Joan leaned in and kissed him. Well, he had invented kissing so why not start with the best, not to mention she still had her huge crush on him. When she opened her eyes he was gone, but the touch of his lips lingered on. And she knew for the first time that this thing with Adam would be alright. It would be hard and hurt like hell, but at least she wouldn't have to go through it alone.
