AU Drabble one-shot. What if Marius and Eponine's places were reversed? What if Marius was the one shot down at the barricade? Just a drabble that popped in my head:)

"Marius!" Eponine cried and Monsieur Marius staggered towards her as he climbed down from the barricade. "Monsieur, what are you doing?!"

"I...was patrolling the barricade. I was shot at. Just a small scratch is all. It matters not Ponine," he said. Marius collapsed to the ground in pain.

Eponine pried his hands from his jacket. There was blood everywhere. "God Monsieur! What were you thinking?!"

Marius coughed and shook his head. "I wasn't."

Eponine laughed. "You always did have a sense of humor Monsieur Marius." She got down onto the ground and sat behind Marius, holding him to her closely.

"Ponine?" he asked.

Eponine stroked his hair. "Yes Monsieur?"

Marius looked up at her. "Do you love me?"

Eponine looked at him questioningly. "Whatever made you think that?"

"I heard you singing. That day I met Cosette. You..." he coughed. "You said that I didn't care about you and that you loved me..." Marius said before breaking into another fit of coughing.

Eponine held him close and stroked his hair. "Well...you heard me right Monsieur. I do love you. Very much." Tears ran down her cheeks.

Marius smiled at her. "I'm glad. Because I love you as well Ponine. Not the way I do Cosette but I do truly love you." He coughed again.

Eponine kissed his hair and began to sing softly. "Don't you fret, Monsieur Marius, you won't feel any pain. A little fall of rain, can hardly hurt you now. I'm here..."

"That's all I need to know," Marius replied softly.

"I will stay with you...till you are sleeping..." Eponine promised.

"Ponine!" Marius shouted and reached a hand to her cheek.

"What Monsieur? What is it?!" Eponine cried.

He smiled. "Call me Marius, Ponine. I like it when you call me Marius."

Eponine kissed his cheek. "As you wish Marius."

Marius closed his eyes. "I like that. Oh, Eponine?"

"Yes Monsieur?"

"Tell Cosette...tell her...that I-" he was cut short as his body went limp in Eponine's arms.

"No..." Eponine whispered. "Monsieur?" she questioned. There was no response. "Monsieur?!" Eponine cried, shaking Marius' limp body. "No!" She placed a kiss to Marius' lips. "I love you..." she whispered before collapsing on top of his body as she shook with sobs. "Goodbye...Marius."
