Selfish?

The sunlight crept over the ruins of the brick building. While it was a pleasant and inspiring sight to most people, to Kei it was fatal. Being a vampire, the warm sun rays on his pale skin would surely destroy him.
But he paid no heed. For he was much too preoccupied with the man in his arms, coughing up blood, on the brink of death.
Death was a monster. One of Kei's worst fears. Ironic for a vampire... but Kei was not just any vampire. Death had stripped him of many friends. But if Sho was its next victim...
"Don't die!" screamed the blonde-haired man, staring down at his best friend of many years in shock. His chest pained him greatly; he felt as if his soul was being ripped out of his body. He would be nothing but an empty shell if Sho passed on.
Kei had thought about this many times before. He had even voiced his thoughts to Sho when they were younger.
"Some day you will die... and I'll be left behind..."
But every time he had thought about losing the most important person in his endless life, every time he had woken up trembling from his nightmares... he had never realized it would be this painful.
Sho was his reason for living. Kei had contemplated letting himself die many times before. Many many times. But each of these times, he would be reminded of Sho. Of their strong bond and friendship.
He was sobbing now, huddled over his best friend's shaking body. "Sho..." he managed in between tears, "Sho you can't leave me now... you can't!"
Sho's response was to squeeze Kei's hand tighter, blood continuing to flow freely from the wound in his torso. "I-I-" His eyelids were fluttering shut, his face drained of color.
And that is when it all sunk in. In a few minutes... Sho would die... and Kei could do nothing to stop it...
Or could he?
He remembered that fateful night so many years ago. He remembered the feel of sharp fangs piercing into his fragile skin. He remembered sobbing after the man had finished, screaming "let me die, let me die! Oh God let me die!"
To this day he had regretted his very existence in this world as a vampire. It was a curse, it was a burden, it was like waking up one morning to discover that you could never go back to sleep again. Except it was worse. It was so much worse. It was living a nightmare.
Kei had always cursed the man who had done this to him. He had sworn he would never be so inhumane; he would never do this to anyone.
And yet, as he witnessed the suffering of his friend and anticipated Sho's departure from his own life forever, he couldn't hold back. He knew it was a cruel thing. To force the one person he cared about most to join him in this nightmare. But right now, all he wanted was for them to be together. Forever.
Holding the other man's hand tightly, he hovered over his body. "I'm sorry Sho. I'm so sorry." And with that short and rather unexplanatory apology, he sunk his fangs into the tender skin of Sho's neck, tears still streaming down his eternally young face.
"But I can never let you go..."
