It was Evan Hansen's favorite part of the day: the end of it. Heaving a heavy sigh, he pushed the key into the slot in the door and pushed it open. He could immediately feel the weight lift off his shoulders and sense the uncomfortable pit in his stomach slowly fade. When Evan was at home, he didn't have to be anybody but himself and didn't need to obsess over if everyone was judging him. Yet Heidi still didn't seem to understand why he wouldn't go out more often.
Evan didn't have any homework, and he found himself wandering up the stairs to his room and to his desk. He stared blankly at the piece of paper in front of him. Vaguely recalling his last visit with his therapist, he remembered that she had told him that most people can be connected to a different color. Like by how they dress, act, or their personality. She had told him this to deepen his understanding of people, but it's not like he was a robot and didn't understand others' emotions and actions. Still, the thought intrigued him. He started to think of the people in his life and assigned them a color.
Jared Kleinman: Evan thought he would be orange. Jared was flaring, quick-witted, sarcastic, and sometimes feisty. Even though he put out that he didn't care about him or other people, Evan knew that Jared had a big heart. (Evan would one day learn the hard way that accusing Jared of being sensitive would get him punched).
Connor Murphy: Quickly he decided Connor was red. He was always shooting angry looks at everyone, and wore leather jackets, ripped up jeans, and black boots. Once, while at the mall with Jared, he saw him in Hot Topic looking at punk rock vinyls. Evan noticed how most of the time Connor's hands were bruised like he got in fights behind the school or something. He and Connor hadn't been friends very long, maybe more acquaintances, but he quickly became someone who Evan was comfortable with. In a way, Connor balanced out how loud and obnoxious Jared could be with how cool, calm, and collected he sometimes was. (He mentioned this one time in front of both boys and Jared immediately and quite blatantly called him gay).
Alana Beck: She was purple to him. Alana was genuine, passionate, and very outspoken. At first, Evan was very intimidated by how perky she was and how often she chattered. Since the beginning of high school, Alana was the top of their class, and in the classes they shared it was not unusual to see her arm shot in the air. He found it comforting how there were no awkward silences around her. (Another plus was Alana tutoring him for math tests sometimes).
Zoe Murphy: It was obvious to him that she was yellow. Zoe was always the light in the room, from her brightly colored converses to her bright eyes and cheery smile. She was kind to everyone, and he found out that she volunteers at the animal shelter during the summer. To Evan, Zoe was in every sense of the word an angel. He had been able to get over some of his nervousness around her to be comfortable with her presence. Sometimes, when he's hanging out with Connor, Zoe comes downstairs to be with them. (Zoe wouldn't say it but she totally thinks it's cute when he blushes around her. Evan is oblivious to this and gets even more embarrassed though.)
Evan was glad he thought about this. A smile was left on his face as he realized that he had some pretty awesome people in his life, and he wouldn't trade them for the world.
