At the End of the Day

Tired. I'm so tired and worn out. Another busy day passed with hardly a chance to sit down. Don't get me wrong, I love the Pokemon I treat, and I like meeting all the trainers that come in and out, but it's wearing. How many times do I have to tell people that their pokemon need _rest_ as well as training?

Some days, days like today, I wish my job was simpler. When you're Nurse Joy, you're in charge and every little crisis is heading your way, so be ready. Jenny has it easy, in some ways. At the end of her shift she can hand off the cases to Adam to take care of. Not that she always does. Oh no, there are some cases that she can't let drop and then I don't see her for days, it seems. She's driven.

But today isn't one of _those_ days for Jenny. She's here, at home, waiting for me with a glass of wine and a sympathetic smile.

"Have I ever told you, Joy, that you work to hard?"

"Not today, you haven't. But yesterday, the day before that and the day before that one…"

"Oh, well, I'd hate to neglect today. You work to hard." We both laugh. It's one of our little things. Our joke. "Really, Joy, you should at least get another Chansey to help out. It'd give you time for an actual break."

I sigh. Oh, I wish. "Not in the budget, Jen. I wish it were. Today was a killer."

"Not Rai's Flaafy _again_?!"

Rai is twelve and a handful. His poor mother must just be gray. "I only wish is were Mutton. No, Rai decided to catch himself a Pidgey."

Jenny laughs and I relax into the sound. It's the sound of home and comfort and friendship and love. "He didn't. Tell me he didn't."

"Oh yes, yes he did. He taught Mutton thunder and then went after the poor Pidgey that decided to roost in his backyard."

"I guess he caught it."

"And how." I catch myself giggling as I lean against Jen's shoulder. "You should have seen the poor thing…"

"I as good as did. Rai turned himself in at the station for 'Cruelty, Abuse and Battering'. Poor kid was just in tears. It took an hour to get him calmed down and squared away."

Rai's too sweet. "You didn't charge him, did you?" Jen's a stickler for the law. That's just the way Jenny is made.

"We did." She slides a look my way. "He insisted, so don't start. We sentenced him to a week helping out in the PokeCenter. You've got an assistant, starting Monday."

I laugh, I have to, it's just too much. "Looking out for me, Officer Jenny?" I murmur, snuggling into her. I feel one hand move through my hair.

"Somebody's got to. Hmm. I should let you catch a shower. I'll get dinner. I'll even clean up after."

"No, Jen. I'm good for the cleanup at least."

"It's okay. I'm calling Donovan's for delivery." I get one quick grin as Jenny heads for the kitchen and the phone and I head for our bedroom and the shower. And as the day slides into the evening, I can't help but think that there isn't anything I'd change about today. Not one little thing.
