"Korra," Mako whispered, his voice broken. He let a few tears slip past his guard. "I'm sorry," he continued, his voice cracking as more tears threatened to fall, "I'm so sorry."
Korra lay motionless on the bed beside him; she had been badly injured in a fight with the dark spirits and was on the verge of death. Mako, who had remained in Republic City to try to uncover the mystery surrounding the terrorist attacks, came to visit his former girlfriend as soon as the terrible news had reached him.
Her body was covered in deep gashes and wounds; her lips were swollen and various bruises littered her lower and upper arms. She had developed a black eye as well.
"Is it too late to ask you go penguin-sledding with me?" He asked her as his voice cracked again, even though the effort was futile. He knew she'd never hear him. The words would be left unanswered, with no one to hear the inquiry but him and him alone.
It would take a miracle for her to wake up.
A soft grunt from the woman beside him threw Mako out of his reverie. One thought entered his mind before he quickly pushed it aside – impossible.
"Korra! KORRA! Are you all right?" The firebender asked as he gently placed his hands on both of her cheeks. It took every ounce of his being to prevent himself from kissing every inch of her face.
"Mako," the person in question breathed. She relaxed into his touch as a small smile graced the corners of her lips.
"I'm fine," Korra responded weakly, sleep threatening to claim her again. She let out a light chuckle as she regarded the man of her affections with a tender glint in her eyes.
"By the way, city boy, going back to your earlier question – I'd love to go penguin-sledding with you," the Avatar whispered, gently squeezing the hand that was clasped in her own.
Mako's eyes softened as he kissed Korra on the forehead. "I'm glad," he replied as he shot her a weary smile. "I'm sorry – I'm sorry for breaking up with you. I put my job before everything else when I should have worried about what truly mattered to me the most – you."
A few tears rolled down his cheeks as he continued, "I thought I lost you. I'll never let anything come between us again." He promised as he touched his forehead to hers. He squeezed her hand again, hoping to get a response.
He didn't.
Mako slowly brought his gaze down to the woman who rested on the bed beneath him. He couldn't believe what he saw.
Korra, who had looked up him with a small speck of life in her azure orbs, now lay dead on the piece of furniture. She was limp, motionless, and void of life.
"Korra? Korra! Please answer me. Please. I love you. So much. PLEASE! KORRA!" Mako cried in sheer agony, gently shaking his beloved. Crocodile tears rolled down his cheeks, and he could have cared less if anyone saw him.
No. Korra wasn't dead. She'd come back and recuperate. They'd get married, have children, and live a long, happy life together.
"KORRA!" He screamed, his voice breaking again. Mako fell to the ground and cursed the spirits for doing this to him.
Why? Why him? He was not a perfect human being, but then again, who was? He made mistakes, but that was what made him human.
He didn't deserve this.
She was gone.
And she was never coming back.
Well, here I am, venturing into a new fandom! I hope you all liked this one; I wrote this after the first Makorra break-up scene aired but I forgot to post it.
Be on the lookout for more Makorra oneshots from me in the future! I promise my future oneshots will not be angsty (or as angsty) as this one was, lol. I truly couldn't help myself though; I had a really bad case of plot bunnies at the time when the inspiration hit me!
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
Until then, take care.
Sincerely,
beyondtheskies xoxo
