Disclaimer: I don't own Death Note. I only own Acey, Jaime and the names Vivica and Kie.

With his back to the doorway of the playroom, Near sensed her before he saw her; Acey of Spades.

The very bane of his existence.

"So, am I correct in assuming that you were the one who received L's documents on the Kira Case?" He said, reaching up to add another Lego on his tower. "Mello didn't get them and neither did Matt."

A red binder sank into his line of vision. Looking up, Near looked into the deepest pair of hazel eyes he'd ever seen. She looked exhausted.

"Here, take them before I change my mind," Acey said curtly, tossing the binder in his lap. "I was going to give them to Matt, but..."

"Thank you," Near said simply as he placed the binder on the floor beside him. "Why didn't you just keep them?"

Acey pursed her lips, looking away from Near. "'Cause I am leaving. Mello called collecting help."

"I see."

"Near?"

It was her tone that made him look at her again. His spine stiffened when Acey knelt down in front of him, her long blonde hair cascading over his shoulders. He dropped the Lego in his hand when she wrapped her arms around him, burying her face in his neck.

"Please," She whispered. "Please catch Kira, if not for L, then do it for Viv and Auntie Kie."

Her voice was so desperate. Slowly, slowly, he wrapped his arms around her, feeling something warm and wet fall on his neck.

"Will you promise me something?" She asked.

"And what would that be?" Near inquired. Glancing over her shoulder, he could see the ghost boy, Jaime standing there. His eyes were narrowed in a look that read 'don't you dare do this to her.'

"Promise me that we will see each other again."

Near's eyes drifted closed. A moment later, against his will, he spoke, if only to make her stop crying.

"I promise."

Anything, for you.
