"Mummy mummy mummy!"
A boy no older than four tugged on his mother's sleeve.
"Look what I got for you!" He reached behind her ear and pulled out a beautiful red rose. His mother accepted it in delight and kissed his forehead. She sniffed the delicate flower then beamed at her son. "You're gonna make a great magician one day."
Dean, who happened to witness that, tore his eyes away from the scene before depressing memories come flooding back. Well, more of them. The floodgates didn't go up fast enough. In the diner they were in, happy families were all around them, chatter accompanied by bursts of laughter resonated off the walls.
Blond hair, blue eyes, a soothing voice singing Hey Jude… Dean shook his head hard with the belief that that would make it all go away. He turned back to Sam, who was busy staring at the screen of his laptop. His eyebrows were knitted in concentration.
Dean cleared his throat. "Uh, Sammy?"
No response.
Dean reached over and pushed the laptop shut. That got his brother's attention.
"Dean! What the-"
"Quit watching porn, Sammy. Look around, smell the roses. Or in this case, burgers."
Sam did so, then turned his attention back to Dean with a nonchalant shrug. "What am I supposed to see?"
If Dean could make a penny for every time he rolled his eyes at Sam, he'd be a billionaire by now. "Don't you think there are too many… happy families around in a burger joint on a freakin' Sunday morning?"
"No…? How is this - wait a minute." Sam went to the counter and grabbed a leaflet. Upon returning, he read it out loud. "Mother's Day special - 30% off entire bill. Today only."
Dean nodded, but said nothing. Sam raised an eyebrow. "You… wanna talk about mum?"
All he got back was a cold glare, but Sam pushed on. "It's okay to talk about her once in a while, y'know. It hurts, I know, but-"
"Mother's Day. We never got to celebrate it."
Dean never celebrated Mother's Day… at least not that he remembers. Sam has it worse - he never even got the chance to.
Sam sighed. "Dean-"
"Drop it, Sammy. Go back to work."
Sam obeyed. Within a few seconds, the youngest Winchester was in his research mood again, occasionally pausing to stab at his salad.
Dean let out an almost inaudible sigh and went back to his burger, but before he took another bite (and after confirming that Sam is not peeping at him over his laptop), he planted a quick kiss on the ring he wore on his right ring finger - his mother's wedding ring.
Happy Mother's Day, mum.
