William McKinley High School's gymnasium had been turned into a glittering mess of silver and purple to match some theme you can't remember and can't figure out by looking at your surroundings. It's hard to decided if the it's nice or garish.
You stand in the middle of the mock dance floor in your expensive dress with your crown securely placed atop your head with it's perfectly done up-do. You graciously turn down hands that extend to you in the hopes you'll clasp their sweaty paws and allow them to twirl you clumsily around. You glance at your fellow classmates, the guys who sunk the flask in, your chaste cheerios who are currently grinding against any football player meat they can during the slowest song of the night, you see Mr. Schuester spinning Ms. Pillsbury who's gleeful giggles can be heard across the room, you can see the look of disgust on the coach's face at the cute sight, you see your king dancing too closely to the most annoying girl you've ever known and that should bother you but it doesn't, not tonight.
All around you is happy people but your eyes are locked on the girl standing against the wall with her head hung low as she listens to her wheel chaired friend ramble on about something or another. She's dressed in a plaid dress, her hair is curled in a messy bedhead style, her feet are clad in combat boots and her has too much lime green eyeshadow on. The loser holding the wall up shouldn't be the one you want to dance with, shouldn't be the one you can't take your eyes off of. But there she is in her dorky gothicness unfairly taking your breath away.
She looks up then, locking eyes with you and in that moment the whole dizzying room falls away. So without thought you glide over to her, your dress giving the effect of floating (in a non-creepy nun way). You hear Artie ask what she's looking at and you wonder for the millionth time why she's friends with the little nerd.
Standing there in front of her your normal confidence fails you and words don't come so instead you reach out and grab her clammy hand and pull her towards the door. Artie calls out and you have to bite your tongue as to not shoot an insult in return. Insulting her friends will clearly get you nowhere.
Without a word, you pull her to a dark corner of the parking lot and stop. You turn to face her with fear bubbling in your empty stomach. You desperately want to kiss her but you can't. It's not that you haven't kissed her before. No there have been many kisses shared between the two of you, but each one of those had taken place safely behind a locked bedroom door. Here in the wide openness of William McKinley High's parking lot with a large amount of the student body feet away you don't have the strength.
She's been quietly staring at you the whole time, she's always quiet that's one of the things you like best about her. For once she's the strong one she's leaning forward placing a quick peck against your glossed lips. In that moment with the fading music drafting from the gymnasium you realize you just might be in love with the stuttering goth girl you've known since second grade and you realize that might not be so scary after all.

-I'm standing in the center of the room
I'm watching boys follow girls perfume
All is as it should be I assume
Except for the distance between me and you-
