She was finally with him. Him; her happiness. Her laughter. Her hopes and dreams. Her life.

Her lover. But their reunion was not in the form that she had expected nor that she had desired.

But there was nothing that she could do; It was fate's gift.

No one could change fate.

She forced back a cry of pain, a strangled gasp replacing it as the bullets tore through her being as easily as a warm knife through butter. Intense pain throbbed throughout her body as she lay beside him, the crimson pool surrounding them widening at a rapid pace.

And she smiled. A small, beautiful smile mixed with a hint of melancholy that only he would understand. A smile she showed to him and absolutely no one else. Her last smile.

He longed to smile back, but could not. Fate had decided to be especially harsh on them.

And no one could change fate.

So he did what he could in his agonized state; He reached out to grasp her hand.

She extended her hand as well, trying her very best to close the gap in between them, but was forced to let the space between them remain forever empty. Fate had chosen to let them suffer.

And after all, no one could change fate.

So their limbs fell limp to the ground as everything began to darken, their last chances of a happy ending being pried from their now-icy grasp between every spaced heartbeat.

And right before all traces of hope and love left their eyes, she attempted to choke out three simple words.

But no, fate would not allow it.

And no one could change fate.
