He held tightly to my hand to assure himself I still stood there. I stopped in my tracks, pulling him to a halt. He turned to me with those brown eyes, questions sparked but not exactly spoken. I allowed the chuckle to escape my throat in response to his insecurity. I stepped closer to him and linked my arms around his neck.
"Wilbur Robinson," I smiled as his arms wrapped around my waist. I ran my fingers over his perfect black hair. "I spent over 12 hours in a car with you. If, in any of that time, I didn't not feel confident about meeting your family I would have ducked out on the freeway." My thumb gently brushed over his cheek. I felt him lean into my hand.
"Chloe, you just don't understand," he started, "My family is-"
"Eccentric," I finished. "You've told me many times." I looked over his shoulder at the beautiful Robinson mansion. The butterflies took flight in my stomach. "Think about me, I'm about to be introduced to the family of the most amazing man I've ever known... whose father just so happens to be the Father of the Future." Wilbur rolled his eyes. I laughed a little harder this time.
Wilbur pulled a little tighter, "You know he's not really that great."
"Hmm," I sighed and rocked to my tiptoes. "Funny, because he created a great son." I kissed him sweetly. He groaned in happiness.
"Okay, I'm ready to go in."
Wilbur slowed on the steps as if expecting something to happen. Before I could ask about it a head popped out of the left side flower pot, "Hey Wilbur!" I screamed and practically leaped into Wilbur's expectant arms. He laughed and turned to the right as another head popped out of that pot as well.
"Wilbur, welcome home," the second head claimed.
Wilbur proudly set me back on my feet beside him. "Uncle Spike," he gestured to the left, "Uncle Dmitri," he nodded to the right.
"Who's the chick?" Dmitri's question came with two pairs of eyes looking me over carefully.
"Gentlemen, meet Chloe Mansen, my girlfriend." Both gasped as I smiled brightly.
The twins looked straight at each other and talked as if we didn't exist. Wilbur knocked loudly and held on to my hand tightly. I smirked to myself when I caught Dmitri saying something about how odd it was that Wilbur had a girlfriend. I focused on the heavy footsteps behind the door, what could be more terrifying then two random heads popping out of potted plants? How about an eight foot tall octopus?
I open my mouth to ask, but Wilbur jumped in. "Chloe this is our butler, Lefty."
I smiled, "What, did he belong to a mob?" Wilbur laughed and shook his head. We passed Lefty giving him our jackets.
"Hey Lefty, I parked outside the garage. If you could bring in mine and the Lady's bags and prepare the red room for her stay. Oh, and have Carl help you." Lefty mumbled and went of to work.
My eyes finally had the chance to take in the luxurious hall we stood in. The beautiful crown molding, lovely purple walls covered in family photos. I walked slowly, examining each photo hoping to get an idea of what I would be meeting.
"Come on," Wilbur whispered, "I'll give you the tour and we'll see who we run into."
