A/N: A quick little drabble oneshot that I thought of, I found the idea interesting but I only wished I could make it longer...
Disclaimer: Would I honestly be writing fanfiction if I owned Pokémon? Nope, therefore, I do not own Pokémon.

What Makes a Champion
"Grandfather?" The young redhead poked his head through the door to his Grandfathers room, carefully wondering how to make his request.
The elder turned around and smiled at little Lance. "Yes? What is it my boy?"
He twiddled his thumbs and started, "Um, well Grandfather I was wondering if I could get my own Pokémon." The boy said nervously.
Lance's Grandfather looked at him with a surprised look on his face, wondering why the eight year old would ask this. "Oh? Why do you want one?" He asked suspiciously.
"Well... I want to be like you and my father!" Lance said with a look of determination, "I want to be the best dragon trainer in the world! I want to be in the Pokémon League someday!"
The elder admired Lance's ambition, and was reminded of how he was when he was his age. "Very well, but you know that training a Dragon Pokémon is hard work, correct?"
Lance nodded his head with determination, and his grandfather chuckled. "Come with me."
He nodded again and followed his Grandfather to the cave behind the gym in Blackthorn City; he had heard many tales about this cave and all of the rare dragon Pokémon that dwelled within it. He couldn't believe that he himself would be going into this cave at his age. As they entered the cave he looked around curiously, he thought it seemed pretty creepy.
"All right," Young Lance was snapped out of his thoughts and these words that his grandfather had uttered, as he turned around to face Lance, he spoke again, "Take these pokeballs. You may seem a bit young and unprepared, but being my grandson I'm sure you have a lot of natural talent. Now, try to catch that Dratini over there." He pointed to the Pokémon in question. Lance narrowed his eyes at it, it looked like some freaky snake from one of his picture books, and he couldn't believe that THAT was a Dragon Pokémon. The elder, seeing his disbelief, encouraged him further, "That Pokémon may not look like much now boy, but believe me it can turn into a magnificent Dragon Pokémon like no other. Go on now." He shoved Lance towards the Dratini, which seemed to be unaware of their presence.
Lance inched closer to the creature, taking in that it did look pretty cute. "Ummmm..." The boy hummed, he wasn't given any instruction so he had no idea what to do. The Pokémon seemed to have heard his noise and quickly took notice of the young boy. But, to his shock, the Pokémon did not run off. In fact, it got closer to him and stared up at him with those little beady eyes. Lance gave a smile and took a liking to the little guy. He quickly remembered what to do and threw you pokeball at it, after the ball shifted for a bit it stopped and the Dratini was caught. Lance smiled and picked up his pokeball, finding it hard to keep in his overwhelming joy. Soon, he gave in.
"Look Grandfather, look! I caught a Pokémon! I did it!" He cheered happily; he quickly opened the pokeball to reveal the Dratini. At the sight of its new master, the Dratini slithered its way up to around Lance's neck and wrapped over his shoulders. Lance smiled in delight and caught his grandfather smiling at him in return.
"Good job, Lance."
