For as long as he can remember, he hasn't felt right in his skin. Something was always missing, something slightly off. So when he rushes from the movie to find Sam's cult at his house all waiting, and when his body reacts on its own, growling and shifting to a wolf bigger than any he's ever tell of except in legends—

It hurts. Of course it does, that first time. He doesn't notice until he's human again, but his bones burn and ache. His skin finally fits right, though, and his packmates' thoughts sliding through his mind fill him, too.

They run and hunt and play, closer than friends, closer than brothers. When he changes, it doesn't hurt anymore; when the pack howls, he feels at home, complete. Nothing missing except her—but Samuel commands him to leave the leech's mate alone, so Jacob will.
