The Man with the Iron Fists
By: Zach Tesar
Prologue
"Come on Vic! I know you can do this!" My father yelled.
The smell of burning fuel echoed within the track. At only thirteen years old, I was the best go-cart racer in Central City. My eyes shut. I felt the vibrations of the engine go up my spine. The referee waved a checkered flag and I heard a loud buzz.
"Lets do this." I said to myself. I slammed on the gas and went flying. All was going well until the third lap. My foot must've slipped, because the next thing I knew, I was out of control. I spun at least twenty times. I hit the wall and my head whipped around and hit the side of my cart.
The crowd jumped out of their seats and ran onto the track. The other racers slowed down and watched. Minutes later, an ambulance came and wiped the blood off of the cart. My vision was blurry and I heard a loud ringing. Everybody's voices were quiet. I remember being carried onto a stretcher and into the ambulance. As soon as I lay down, I lost consciousness.
This is where my story begins.
Chapter 1
"Hello? Victor?" said the nurse waving a flashlight in my eyes. I woke up with a migraine.
"Ah…what's going on? Where am I?" I asked. I looked around and could only see out of my right eye.
"You're at S.T.A.R. labs, Vic. You're lucky to be alive. Now, before you get scared, in your accident, shrapnel of the cart embedded itself in your face. We had to dig it out, that's why you can't see. But…we installed a robotic server to the missing place."
She handed me a mirror and I screamed. She calmed me down and told me about my arms and legs. I looked down and saw that both my legs were covered in some type of metal. My right arm was amputated and my left arm was covered in metal as well. I started to hyper ventilate and the nurse tried to calm me down. She had my father come in and he talked to me.
"Why didn't you put anything on my right arm?" I freaked. She told me that they have a plan to put a robotic arm on there, but I woke up too early.
A week later, I had the right arm on me and I was back up and running. I was worried that no one would look at me the same, and boy was I right. The schools didn't accept me into the athletics program because of my cybernetic advantage. My girlfriend from the seventh grade even disowned me. I was ready to die. My best friend, Barry, moved away and I had no way of contacting him. My dad didn't even like him. He said he moved too fast and was a bad influence.
"So, now what?" I asked.
"You're going to stay home and rest. I have to go to the lab for an hour or two." He handed me note with his number on it, in case I needed him.
I absolutely despised my suit. When I put clothes on over the, I looked like I overdosed on steroids. But, eventually I got use to it. It was waterproof, so I still got to go swimming and stuff. My left eye implant helped my find things that were lost.
About a month after getting used to the suit and figuring things out, I met a pretty cool dude, named Ronald Evers. He and I became the best of friends. Until, that one day where I found out, he entered a life of crime.
He broke into S.T.A.R. labs one night and stole the files about my accident and my metal prosthetics. He read that they were farming out Stone's cybernetic technology to military contracts. He lost his temper and decided to plant a bomb at the lab.
RIIIING! I picked up the phone and it was my dad. He yelled that Ron had planted a bomb in the heart of the lab. He said he was coming home to take care of me, but I felt like I could help. I threw on my steel boots and started to walk to the lab.
"There's got to be another way." I said to myself. "It's a metal suit, it has to have something." I looked around on my legs and saw a red button. I pressed it and my boots caught on fire. I went flying into the air and was hovering about ten feet in the air. My PTSD kicked in and I started to hyper ventilate again. My suit realized this and an automated woman's voice came on.
"Master Victor, are you okay? I read that you are suffering from a, 'Post Traumatic Stress Disorder' attack. I'm going to need you to take a long and big breath." I did so and I calmed down.
"Who are you?" I asked.
"I am your personal internal voice command system. My name is M"
I nodded. "Do you know how to fly this thing?"
"I don't suggest flying, sir. Your suit however, allows you to run at supernatural speeds." M responded.
I dropped to the ground, making a crater. I got down in running position and darted out at ten miles an hour. I gradually gained speed, eventually topping out at forty mph.
"This…is…awesome!" I yelled to myself.
"Indeed." M answered.
I reached S.T.A.R. labs and came to a halt. I wasn't exactly an expert at using the suit yet. When I came to a stop, I stopped too fast and went flying forward ten feet. I lied down, looking at the sunset, laughing. I jumped up and saw that the building was on lock down.
"Override, Level 10, Stone, Silas." I said to the computer. My voice was incredibly similar to my father's. I used to unlock his safe the other day to borrow a couple of bucks. Don't tell him I told you. I walked and Ron started to fire at me.
Scared, I put up my arms, absorbing the shock of the bullets. "Hey, man! Calm down! It's me…Victor."
He stopped firing and said, "Vic! What are you doing here?"
"I'm here to stop you! You stole another Cyborg suit! And you have a live bomb in the largest science lab in Central City! I don't want to hurt you. Just turn off the bomb and turn yourself in."
"Oh, no. You won't hurt me…but I will hurt you." Ron started to fire again and my suit fired up a shield.
"Awesome!" I yelled. I ran towards Ron, grabbed him by the throat and threw up upwards. I was mesmerized by the strength the suit gave me. I tried to jump, but I ended up flying to the roof. Before Ron started to fall back down, I slammed both of my feet on his back and he fell to the ground.
He jumped up and fired a rocket at me. I went flying through the wall and landed in a hallway a couple of yards away. Ron ran over to the bomb to try to reduce to time 'til it went off. I jumped through the wall and he fired another rocket at me. I dodged the first one and grabbed the second one. I back flipped and kicked the rocket straight towards Ron.
I read on the bomb, 1:00. I had approximately 60 seconds to stop him.
"How are you doing this? You have only been out of the hospital for a month!"
I looked at myself and laughed. I replied that I didn't know and I don't care. I flew over to Ron and put him in a chokehold.
"What's the code? How do I disarm it?" He said there was no way he would tell me. There was 30 seconds left. I slammed his helmet, causing him to pass out.
"Ah, crap." I said. I started to pace back and forth thinking of what to do. I snapped and went outside. "Everybody! Run away from here as fast as you can!" I ran back inside and saw that there was 6 seconds left. I sprinted over there and grabbed the bomb. I shot a whole through the roof and flew up there. At the two-second mark, I threw the bomb up and kicked it in the air as hard as I could.
It exploded within a non-lethal distance, but it defiantly threw me backwards.
"Ohhh!" I yelled.
When the police helped everybody and repaired the building, I realized I had great potential. I went up to my dad and asked him, "You know that Batman guy?"
"Yeah, what about him?" He responded.
"He's a superhero. Look what I did at S.T.A.R. labs the other day. I saved thousands of people. Maybe…I could be a protector…of you know…the city?"
"Are you kidding me?" He responded. "Well…I guess. You kind of have a giant metal suit. You had a missile explode in your face and didn't get hurt."
"See?" I said. "I can do this, man!I'm 50 percent steel!" I paused for a moment while looking in the mirror. "What kind of weapons do you have to attach to my suit? I'm going to need some heavy stuff. We went to S.T.A.R. labs when it was finished rebuilding, and I got suited up. I looked at myself in the mirror and said out loud, "I am Cyborg."
