Rain crashed hard on the street pavement with a loud thud. The sky was pitch black with the sun nowhere to be seen, the only light in the sky was the occasional lightning strike. The streets were dead, no one wanted to be out in this weather. Absolutely dreadful. It was as if the heavens themselves were weeping. A lone police car drove through the lonely road, clashing against the pounding rain. Its driver, an imposing mountain of a man, peeked into his rear view mirror, taking the time to angle it down at his passenger.
"You feeling alright there, pal?" The driver asked, receiving only silence in return. "You hungry? After what you've been through I'd imagine you're starving." Again. Silence. "Look, pal… When the verdict was announced, he just walked out of the courthouse without saying a thing. He probably just needs some time to think things over, a lot has happened in the past few days and it's taken quite the toll on him."
The car came to a steady halt in front of a small two story building, the Wright and Co. Law Offices. The driver set the car to park and grabbed an umbrella from the passenger's seat. Opening the umbrella as he exited his car, the driver guided his passenger, a young woman with jet black hair and acolyte robes, to the front door of the building. The woman took a key out from her robe's pocket and inserted it into the door's lock.
"Maya… He'll be back… He's just confused right now… Look, if you need anything feel free to call me."
Maya said nothing as she turned the key and opened the door. Stepping inside, Maya looked around at the empty office that greeted her. It felt dead. Dull and hopeless. Maya turned back around to face her escort and took a slight bow, "Thank you, Detective Gumshoe…" She said in a monotone voice before closing the door to the office.
Gumshoe let out a sad sigh as he turned and looked up at the clouds as they continued their relentless assault, "Where are you, pal? She needs you."
Inside the law office, Maya stared at the barren office that bitterly stared back. Maya didn't know what to do. She was exhausted, both physically and mentally. She was starving, but had no appetite. All she wanted to do was cry, but no tears came forth. She didn't know what to do. So she waited. She waited for that knock on the door, she waited for that phone to ring, she waited. She waited so long. Seconds turned to minutes, minutes, turned to hours, hours to days. Nothing. The phone would ring but it was never who she wanted it to be. The door would knock, but it was never who she was waiting for. With nothing better to do, Maya grabbed a book from the shelve and took a seat at the office's desk. She dusted off the book's cover and gently opened it. She read. She read, hoping to pass time until she would hear that knock… But that knock never came.
