"I love you."

Those words racked Edward's brain.

There was no explanation and it was all out of the blue, causing this evident confusion. The look on his face gave it away, and the other had obviously noticed by the hurt look on his own face.

"I'm sorry, I should be going." The words were merely above a whisper, blue eyes strewn away carefully as he made his way towards the door to their shared apartment.

"Alfons, wait." Edward's voice cracked, watching as the taller blonde turned to look at him, looking quite surprised. If he didn't know any better, he would say there was a bit of hope in his eyes and they brightened up from their previous dull form.

A gloved hand pressed to his own temple, Edward not quite sure what he even had to say anymore or why he had stopped the spitting image of his younger brother from leaving. He had wanted to talk, but now found himself at a loss of words, feeling pathetically stupid and he simply stood there and was stared at.

Edward cleared his throat, taking a few steps forward to close the huge gap between them. "Can we talk about this?" Alfons stared at him more as if considering the request before making a simple nod of his head, listening to the sigh that fell from his room mate's lips.

"I don't know if I ever will get back to my world. I don't know what I would do if I never did." Edward began. He was making no sense, none of this relevant to what Alfons had just confessed. The off-subject sentence made Alfons feel a small twinge of annoyance, beginning to wonder why he had agreed to sit around and talk in the first place.

Alfons decided to continue to listen to Edward's rambling after thinking it through. He must have a point to all of this, after all. When did he not?

"You're the only one I'm close to in this world. You're the only thing keeping me going."

Those words caused his heart to beat fast now, and he thought any minute the heat would rush to his cheeks. Maybe his suspicions that Edward would resent him had been completely wrong.

Edward ran a frustrated hand through his bangs, not even able to look his brother's counterpart in the face anymore.

"I'm in love with someone else."

It stung. Every word dropped from those lips stung, and Alfons' heart was beating fast-paced in a completely different manner now. His heart was being tugged at, breaking more with every word. Edward was in love with someone else. Someone from his world. Trying so hard to hide how hurt he was, the German offered a delicate smile.

"Who?"

That was the last question Edward had wanted to answer, especially when he noticed the flash of pain in Alfons' eyes for a split second, right before he covered it up. He wasn't stupid. He had learned so much about this man from living with him for the past two years. To think he wouldn't see his emotions was insane.

"He..." Edward started, gulping down all nervousness. "Roy Mustang."

Of course. It was one of the people Edward constantly spoke about from his world. The name was familiar, and he tried to place who exactly it was. "...Your superior?" Alfons asked.

Edward let off a small smile, and Alfons immediately knew he was dead on.

"I promised to stay faithful to him. Until I came back."

Alfons nodded his head now, reaching to grab his jacket and pull it on over his shoulders. The sad smile he shot him before he walked out the door was the last Edward saw.
