Short little drabble for HPFC Pairing the Character competition. It turned out to be a bit more unrequited than I had originally planned, but oh well. I own nothing, and make no profit from this fic.

Green Eyes

Daphne was the consummate Slytherin. Sly, cunning, ambitious, and most importantly, she kept her head down and knew when to speak, or remain silent. So why did her heart melt as she looked across the Great Hall that morning?

Potter was sitting with his friends, and for an instant, his green eyes met her dark ones across the hall.

And Daphne's stupid, traitorous heart started to melt.

Before she realized it, the Great Hall was clearing; only the fifth and seventh years remained, waiting to take their standardized tests. The fifth years were shooed into a room together, and Daphne ended up next to a certain green-eyed Gryffindor.

She took a breath—what was she doing?—and tapped Potter on the shoulder to get his attention. When he turned to look at her, however, her breath caught in her throat.

"What is it?" he asked.

"Granger, Hermione," Professor Flitwick called. "Goldstein, Anthony — Goyle, Gregory — Greengrass, Daphne."

"Nothing," she whispered, as she joined the group of students going out to take their O.W.L. practicals. "Nothing at all."
