"Doctor?" Asked Amy, as she walked into the console room. "Whose jacket is this?"

The doctor looked up to see Amy holding a black leather jacket. "Oh, that?" He said. "That was mine. Quite a while ago, actually."

Amy pulled up a chair next to the Doctor and sat down. "How come you don't wear it any more?"

The Doctor thought carefully about this question. Why didn't he wear that jacket any more?

"Because it no longer suits me." He replied. Amy laughed. "Ha! You don't look tough at all; I bet it never suited you!"

The Doctor had been trying to keep regeneration a secret from Amy. But Rory was busy, so he wouldn't know. The Doctor thought it couldn't hurt to give her the basic facts.

"When a Time-lord is fatally hurt, or killed in another way, they don't die. They regenerate."

Amy looked confused. "What do you mean, regenerate?"

"My whole body and brain changes. I'm completely different."

Amy was starting to understand. "And this was from a past regeneration?"

"Yes. My 9th regeneration, in fact."

Amy saw sadness in the Doctor's eyes. "How… How did you die?"

"I absorbed all the power of the time vortex. I had to. It was for a… friend."

Amy pulled out a photo from the jacket. It was of a man, half bald and wearing the leather jacket that Amy was currently holding, and a young girl, with blonde hair. They were laughing.

"Is this you?" Asked Amy.

"Yes. Yes, that's me." replied The Doctor.

"And who's the girl?

Amy noticed tears in the Doctor's eyes. "That's rose. She was a friend. She's gone now."

Amy hugged the Doctor and slowly fell asleep on his shoulder.

Rose. My beautiful Rose.

And with that, the doctor fell asleep.
