There's a moment in the space between when he touches his fingertips to her chest and when he slams his knee into her stomach that she understands everything. Nearly two centuries of friendship allows her the right to say she knows him more than anyone, even when even she doesn't truly know him.
It's in the way he asks her why she's here, even though she's trembling beneath the strain of her almost fatal injuries.
It's in the way he forces her away from Aizen, from immediate danger – the way he touches her so very gently at first, with hands that she knows have killed more people than years either of them have been alive. The way he could have killed her with Shinso, when she can barely stand let alone defend herself but didn't.
But it's especially in the way, right before he strikes, that he opens his eyes, just so – enough to catch a glimpse of sea-green – the way his mouth quirks into a bitter, genuine smile.
There's a myriad of things he says in that moment their eyes meet - I'm sorry, what are you doing here, you idiot, you're dying Rangiku, stay down stay here stay safe please, and finally I'm glad to see you, even for a moment.
He doesn't say any of those things, but that's okay – they never needed words.
