Chapter One: Waking Up

My heartbeat was the only thing that filled my ears. Liquid surrounded my cold form, and something around my mouth forced air into my lungs; forcing me to live. Everything was silent, and I felt the urge to sink back into unconsciousness. However, just as I was about to fall back asleep, a noise broke through my peaceful heartbeat. Tip, Tip. My brows furrowed together. Who was disturbing me? Carefully, slowly, I opened one, tired eye to behold a small boy with untidy black hair and big, black eyes. He seemed unnaturally curious. Being a bit disturbed and annoyed, I closed my eye again and curled up tighter in a small ball. His voice carried through the glass, the boyish, husky tones reverberating through the thick liquid around me.

Another voice answered him. It seemed as though it were calling the small boy back to whence he came. Something inside of me was relieved while another part of me wished that he would stay, being the first creature I remember seeing. Yet, it was without regret or another thought, I went back to sleep, seldom reawakening. The heavy liquid around me made sure of that.

Perhaps it had been decades since I had last reawaken, perhaps weeks. Regardless, I was awake now, and many things had changed. The liquid around me was draining quickly, and an extremely loud alarm was resounding around me. My hands flew up to cover my ears as my bare shins met the cold metal below me. I was wet and cold, my skin exposed to the unforgiving air. My light brown skin contrasted so drastically from the shiny, pale metal below. Behind me, my fawn-colored wings reached out to test their new muscles, but the invisible glass prevented that from happening. Experimentally, I touched the strange force field. Too meek to try and break free, I watched the situation outside of my little world.

A tall figure was angrily pursuing a smaller, rounder figure wearing a clean white lab coat. I sensed a very negative energy emanating from the taller figure's form. However, despite that dark energy, it was also extremely powerful. The round figure was so weak compared to his predator. Somehow, I felt guilty. My fist gently met the glass in front of me, creating a small tap. Then, suddenly, out of seemingly nowhere, a shout caught my attention.

I swiveled my head in unison with the tall, strong figure, and discovered a team of creatures flying swiftly towards the situation before me that was quickly unfolding into a nightmare. The dark, powerful figure was mercilessly pulling apart the weaker individual, and from what I could make out, there was no reasoning behind the macabre behavior. Compassion and horror filled me, and finally, a single tear rolled down my cheek, splattering on my thigh. I wasn't sure where these emotions were coming from. The horror and compassion quickly evolved into darker emotions such as rage and frustration.

My knuckles rapped once again against the glass, a little harder this time. The team reached the scene far too late. Blood was everywhere, and my head fell, shielding my eyes from the sight. I couldn't see anything, but I could hear grunts and yells as they fought, creating more carnage.

Finally, everything grew silent, and I lifted my head wearily. They were gone. A hole up above brought in light, and slowly, gently, I stood up. With experimental strength, I threw my fist towards the protective glass, and it shattered. The pieces were sharp, but I jumped into the air, supported by my massive wings. It was a strange thing to be suddenly flying through the thin air, somewhat frightening. However, it was with great determination that I soared out of the only place I knew.
