A/N: Another OiS remix to add to the slew of others. Though the idea for mine could technically be applicable to other scenarios. This is my first time writing the present and future tenses.
"Please!" she begs. "Don't leave your bunk tonight." Her slender fingers trace the frown lines creasing his face. "I do not want my Jayne-man to get permanently and prematurely lost in the woods where I cannot follow."
He takes her hand and gently presses a kiss onto her palm. "I ain't one to sit 'round doin' nothin' while yer in danger."
River shakes her head. "There's no danger. The plan works but Jayne cannot be part of the plan otherwise there will be no plan that works. Please." She leans forwards and kisses his temple. "Promise me." So he does.

Jayne will regret his promise. He will go to his bunk. He will try to sleep. He'll hear River's voice echo in the empty halls as she tried to outmanoeuvre Early. He will hear her offer to go with the outsider and his heart will ache painfully.
He will hear a loud bang right outside his bunk and scowl furiously as he pulls the blanket covering his guns over himself. He will turn and try to ignore his gut instinct to protect his girl.
Even though River's plan works, Jayne will envelope her in a hug and not let go.
